    Gators got Brody Donay from Virginia Tech, only a sophomore next year. Hit .260 12 HRs can play catcher and corner outfield. From Lakeland Christian, played with Ty Evans.

    I’ll say he is more than likely a starter rotating, between outfield and catcher. Thinking left field. Love that we get a few years here.

    Florida lands commitment from transfer catcher Brody Donay

    Florida's transfer class gained another commitment Saturday with the addition of catcher Brody Donay. Donay played one season at Virginia Tech and will arrive at Florida with three seasons of eligibility remaining.

    The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Donay recorded 12 home runs in 39 games with the Hokies. He's spending the summer playing in the Cape Cod league with Hyannis, where Donay is currently batting. 424.

    To go along with his 12 home runs, Donay batted .260 during his freshman season with 38 RBIs, a .352 on-base percentage, and a .585 slugging percentage. While he appeared in 39 games, he made 33 starts for the Hokies after taking over the starting job midway through the season.

    Beat me to it. I like the part about Donay is currently batting 424 in the summer league.

    That is a very tall man, especially for a catcher.

    Our man Brody is pretty good at getting hit by a pitch -- eight HBPs in 123 at-bats last year.

    He only played in 33 of Tech's 53 games last year. Injury or just playing time crunch?

    He played in 39 (33 starts), including only 7 of the first 17 but 32 of the last 36. No big gaps in his workload; looks a freshman who provided himself better than the other starting catcher candidate(s).

    Should definitely be a starter. You’re right about battling though. Upside is through the roof. Remember only a rising Sophomore.

    Surprised me but there are currently 6 MLB catchers that are 6’4” or 6’5”. Average is 6’ 1/2

    looks like another 20 homer guy waiting to happen. That lineup could be lethal if Evan keeps improving. Bunch of bashers

    For sure!!! Thinking if Freshman pitchers are what we think they are and we pick up one more pitcher look. Out!

    Could easily see, with protection from Shelton, Cags, and Heyman, Donay going for 15 and 60 next year. Especially when you project what he would have done if he started in every game. Easily would have been 18-20 home runs.

    Nothing not to like about this pick up. Also, 6'5", 215 lbs. is skinny. His power will only increase as he gains muscle like most of our players have done in Sully's system.

    Re: height/weight: If he puts on 10 lb of muscle, he's the same as Joe Mauer (6'5", 225 lb), who did OK. (Edit: may his meniscuses.. menisci? fare better and may he not take the foul tip in exactly the wrong spot on the facemark.)

    Need some kids with power to protect Cags in the order. Played well the second half of year and now in Summer league.

    The more I think about it, the more I think he gets some solid work at catcher. Heyman will DH and play first.


    With Rivera, great defensive catcher, on staff could help him develop to next level.

    With an excellent defensive catcher like Garrison and now this pick up I’d say our catching unit has to be top 3-4 in the country.

    I prefer to see them in action before jumping to those levels of assumptions.

    Well,
    When you look at Heyman’s Freshman numbers, Donay’s Freshman numbers and Garrison’s defensive numbers I’m not thinking it’s a major assumption.
    Numbers don’t lie. We have statistically 2 of the best rising, by the numbers, sophomore catchers in the country and an excellent defensive catcher, again by the numbers, coming in.
    now, could have a slump, injury, etc, but how many colleges return these stats at the catcher position:
    30 home runs
    97 RBI’s
    Catcher that threw out 14 runners this year.

    Maybe 1 other college. Pre-season ( I know means nothing) this unit has to rank top 3.
