you’re right, but since the post you were responding to was not about the SECt, I pretty much ignored it and just read yours. My bad.

Are you aware of any data that further breaks down the results by overall ranking?

While I could see a significant expectations gap between the #1 overall and #8 overall team, I would expect that gap to shrink significantly as you move towards the middle (i.e., #4 overall vs #5 overall).

No. I’ve only seen one study that contrasts 1s, 2s, and all other seeds combined.

Oh I agree. What I wanted to add was that the #1 seed has won more titles than all the other seeds.

If my memory is correct, the gators were predicted by the prognosticators to be no better than 6th in the conference. Anything better than that is a positive for this team. But if they can finish 2nd, even 3rd they will have out performed the expectation of the media significantly. This team has a bright future with a Coach that is only going to get sharper himself.

It's almost hilarious how even the analytics guys underrated us. KP, Torvik, Miyakawa all predicted us to be WORSE this year than last. Of course, none of them will admit how far off they were next year, but will trumpet their one or two "hits."

    Right here
I don’t know these guys personally, but I have never seen Ken hesitate to admit his model’s many imperfections, particularly the preseason predictions which are more guesses than based on any performance data. No preseason rankings are ever great (Kansas was the preseason #1 and Auburn #11 in both major polls!), so I don’t think there is any shame in failing to foresee Florida’s rise. Hell, even us Gator fans were surprised.

FTR, I like these sites and follow them, but, for the most part, they don’t offer a lot of caveats about their projections (Miya, in particular), nor do they offer much explanation for why their projections are so far off (though, you are right, KP will talk about insufficient data).

At any rate, the point is that no one saw us having this kind of success. Wasn’t like there was a massive discrepancy between the poll and the analytics guys on that score.

They're humans, just like you and me. Don't know why anyone treats their opinions like they're anything other than what they are---opinions. The computer models at least take some of the bias out of it, but none of them really mean anything until late in the season when they have real data to process. Preseason and early season rankings and projections are generally a complete waste of time.

At this time of the year all that matters is to win...PERIOD ! All of the polls ,conjecture mean nothing. play your game and avoid dumb mistakes (lazy passes, dumb fouls etc) Oh yes...make your foul shots!
