Not getting a quality transfer starter is what we appear to be missing. We really need Pierce Coppola to come back. That is our X factor this year. Otherwise we are at least one quality arm short.

He’s been around for several years according to the Gator guide I am looking at. That’s a vet without a doubt when you have all the freshmen we have. Heck, 3 years is a vet anywhere in college ball wouldn’t you agree? I’ll take 3 years and lots of learning and a pretty good change up.
Numbers are not even close to all the Frosh on this squad. I’d say 36 appearances qualify him as a veteran
    • Totaled 69 1/3 innings across 36 appearances including six starts in three seasons at UF.
    • Concluded with a 4-3 record, 3.25 ERA and . 236 batting average against.
    • Struck out 67 batters against 27 walks over the course of his career.
my concern is we are at least one to two pitchers short this year. Hard to not see the impact that a veteran with a 3.25 ERA over 36 appearances could have had. He proved himself and is a loss.

Yes and no. Yes, in that I would Agreed that we needed one more quality starter and that needed to be a transfer and no in that I would tell you. We are still one pitcher away even with a quality transfer. That one guy I’m talking about is a middle or set up guy and that is Nesbitt. 3.25 ERA and almost 40 appearances speaks volumes. Many did not realize how solid he was and really underscore his value but the numbers don’t lie that ERA is very impressive.

You must be a relative. However could be a loss. His numbers so far say otherwise. Era over 7

Not an equal comparison. He showed what he could do here with our staff with a 3.25 era over almost 40 appearances. I’ll go with the numbers not 2 appearances with a different staff.

    Where the crawfish stay.
Not getting Luke Holman from the transfer portal was a tremendous miss. He is having quite the impact at LSU.
I believe this team will get better as the year progresses. If Coppola makes it back he could really help the lineup. Also would really like to see Albert and Harrison in the order.

Which begs the question why? UF has such a huge presence in the MLB, impact players, why isn’t there more funds available through player donations?

I think our main issue right now is this:

    Fisher, Cade 7.56 ERA
    Neely, Brandon 9.00 ERA

That is our Friday night starter and All-American closer. I still think they will get it figured out at some point. They were both really good last season.

It is early in the season and I remember how suspect LSU pitching was early last year and they really came around for them in the post season.

Agree with needing to get it figured out and dialed in. Fisher is leaving his two strike pitches on the fat part of the plate. Neely is a lot the same and has no feel for his slider it seems.

    Location-location-location……

I'm sure it all comes down to "matchups". But again... bringing in Neely in a non save situation did not work out. I mean against Miami... he threw 1 pitch and gave up a grand slam. Philpott threw 3 pitches which resulted in a leadoff single. Then Neely comes in and it was just a disaster. (2 IP, 5 ER, 3 BB, 61 pitches). Better hope the offense can put it away early. Otherwise I imagine we're closer by committee at this point. Since Neely is probably burned for the today and tomorrow.

I've said this before and I'll say it again... Albert needs to start and Thomas needs to be benched. Thomas's avg is down to .182... need I say more?

Slater or Cags to the Friday night spot. Fisher to pen in same role as last year.

I don't see Caglionone moving to Friday. Could happen, I guess, but I would be very surprised.

    9 ip 18 K’s 4 BB 3.00 ERA opp 156 BA
Not sure what’s not to like? He’s clearly our best starter with a very small sample size but he was pretty filthy against Miami. Again early but a 4:1 K to Bb ratio is impressive for Cags.

Most don’t but if he’s good again this week as he has been it’s the right move. We have to realize he’s gone after this year and when he’s on he can just about shut anyone down. Offspeed stuff so far is very impressive.

I think it's more likely that if they were going to make a change, it would be Neely sliding into the starting rotation and Slater would be the closer.

FSU will be coming to Gainesville Tuesday night 14-0. Their best wins are over Jacksonville 7-4, USF 12-4 and Florida Gulf Coast 19-3. They swept New Orleans this weekend.

There's a chance Texas A&M will be coming to town next weekend undefeated as well. They are currently 15-0, but trrail Rhode Island 11-7 in the 7th inning, then play Sam Houston Tuesday night. They've beaten Arizona State twice, Southern Cal & Texas and I think their ERA is #1 in the SEC.

    Gators got their hands full.

My thoughts as well and even proposed to a buddy at the ballpark today that it would be interersting for Neely to get the start vs. FSU. He is a veteran and has performed in all kinds of high pressure situations so why not let him start and give us 4 strong innings-- get his mojo back in front of 7,500 fans and then consider him for weekend duty as SP. Move Fisher and Slater to "closer" duties depending on the situation.

I wouldn't say "huge presence", there are a few. But based on some admittedly very limited conversations, I think these may be the last guys to kick in.....my sense was they felt they earned it thru performance, so why should they just give it to those that haven't earned anything. And it's hard to argue that mindset.
