I'll take a day or two to ponder things and then I'll post my final guess at the lineup and batting order. Most of you know the lineup is pretty much set but the batting order. If I get 5 out of 9 right, I'll be happy. From today plenty of guys had multi hit days with the hitters ready to pounce on the unusual lineups. Multi hit guys included Riopelle, Cags, and Schiekofer. Several others had base hits and a walk. Lots of guys were on base most every other inning including the errors and a few that weren't counted as errors.

Man I hope Cags can pull this off. To a much lesser degree, I experienced similar in HS. Big guy who could hit, pitched, and played 1B when not DHing. I look back now and wonder how things might have worked out had I focused on one position/task. I'm really rooting for this kid to do what I couldn't, yet at a much higher level.

    Thanks 87, I think,
I'm note sure if today was the last scrimmage before Opening Day- and I sure hope not. The "comedy of errors" you describe on the field is no way to finish up preps. Not sure why the coaches would want to mix up the field positions as they did and have a ramshackle kind of ending. Your write-up harkens back to Casey Stengel and the '62 Mets- when after another hapless loss he famously asked "can't anyone here play this game"
On the hitting, other than the top guys that we watched last year and know will hit, I circled Scheikofer as someone who has made solid contact in the scrimmages I've attended- line-drive hitter.
But, I'd not put a lot of weight on the hitting at this stage as the hitters have faced/observed the same pitchers repeatedly now for weeks and have a good idea of what's coming. Let's play ball against somebody else.
I agree, Purnell is likely our closer to start the season and hope he is not over worked as he was last year.

I’ve read where he has physically matured and FB up to 93/94 which believe bodes well for him being able to better handle a work load. I believe there were times he was overused last year and he it could not recover.

Yes, Purnell looks a bit stronger and is up a notch or two on FB and his movement and location looked very good.

So what's the prediction for Friday's starting lineup? This is not a projected batting order, just the guys by position:
    Langford LF
    Robertson CF
    Evans RF
    Riopelle C
    Halter 3b
    Rivera SS
    Fabian 2b
    Caglionone 1b
    Prevesk DP
I'm sure many will disagree about 2b, but I just think Sully will give Fabian first shot over transfer Thomas and freshman Kurland.

That's one possibility. I think the DH will be the hardest one to pick and even harder is where in the order will the DH bat.

From what I've seen from Fabian, he would not be in my starting 8 but Sully seems to favor him some as witnessed by how long he stayed with him last year at 3rd. Deric hit .218 last year and .211 on the Cape- where he struck out 33 times in 90 at bats. And we remember his fielding issues last year and although he's made some nice play at short this Spring, I've seen him make two errors that extended innings and cost runs. Granted he's hit well in scrimmages but I discount that a bit because of hitters' familiarity with the pitchers.
I'd give young Kurland a shot at second. But you never know.
Also I am concerned that Halter has not hit at all this Spring, with lots of Ks. Not sure what is happening with him but he needs to hit- not sure Sully would sit him at some point but there are options with Thomas a veteran who has pop and is an excellent fielder. Of course Halter starts on Friday.
On the DH- tough call and probably a L-R platoon. Prevesk and Schiekofer and Heyman and Lastres.

My thoughts exactly and I would add Sully's interest in Fabian might not be so much as a fielder but might be a reason he gives him time at the DH. I'm with you and don't see it as well. But he will probably get a shot to see if he can hit in games. I believe we have better bats for the DH but anyone above .300 average and gets on base almost 40% of the time will be fine with me. Sully has given Kurland far too much scrimmage time at second playing with Rivera at SS to change that for Friday.

Well, I’m a pitching guy, but here’s my thoughts on the opening lineup/batting order—
    Rivera SS
    Robertson CF
    Langford LF
    Cags 1st base
    Riopelle C
    Prevesk DH
    Evans RF
    Kurland 2nd base
    Halter 3rd base

I just want to see Langford in the 3 hole and I put Rivera in the lead off role due to his playing time…..they’ve all got to bat—and they all need to hit…..

Great idea with the rally towel this Friday that way everybody can wipe off the wet seats when they arrive.

    Bold call 74.
I think Sully will go with the scrimmage order for now:

    Robertson CF
    Langford LF
    Cags 1B
    Rivera SS
    Riopelle C
    Evans RF
    Prevesk DH
    Kurland 2B
    Halter 3B

Sproat SP for 6 complete innings; Ficc. first out of the pen, and if necessary Purnell in 9th -- but if big lead, Cade Fisher to get him some real game experience early on.

What happened that Prevesk is all of a sudden everyone’s pick for DH?

Well 77 I'd say you are closest to the cup if I was judging. I'll be picking a different DH and probably a different mid reliever but haven't decided who on either yet. But you nailed my batting order.
