I have a meeting on campus this afternoon - I may be able to drop by the Park for a few innings afterward-- maybe.

Scrimmage notes: 4 innings of 4.
    Finnvold for Blue; Alvarez C
    Ursitti for Orange; Heyman C

NOTE: Lastres was scratched from Orange- he was on the board as 3rd base/Catcher so likely swapping out with Heyman—hopefully nothing serious- he was dressed in shorts.
Seemed like Kopp was running the scrimmage today.

    Top of 1st-- odd:
Langford led off with bouncer to third- Halter fielded and had the out at first… but Langford given the base. Rivera walked and BT bunted moving runners over. Kurland singled to right scoring a run - and then the fun began-- as Rivera held at 3rd and the cutoff to plate throw back to try to get Kurland sailed into RF scoring Rivera and advancing Kurland to 3rd.
Sloppy enough to stop play for a team meeting on the field…Everyone assembled. Kopp running the show.
Riopelle up again and sac fly scored Kurland and then Heyman FO to end the inning but only two runs posted. Odd.

Finnvold had an easy 1-2-3 second inning—so not a bad outing at all given the unusual play.

Ursitti pitched well. A few hits – one off Riopelle glove and another that a good 1st baseman would have gloved – note: BT does not seem to be ideal D at 1st.

Ficc in 3rd for Blue and threw very well. Hit Blair who was leaning well over the plate but Blair thrown out trying to steal on a nice throw from Alvarez.

Hartzog in for Orange in 3rd and after breezing for two outs; Evans walked, Cags line drive single to CF, Shelnut another singe RBI, Halter HBP, Thomas BB ( RBI), Robertson BB but prior—pass ball on Heyman and Kopp hard assed him- saying clearly- “that was the winning run in the 9th Luke—ya know”? a bit over the top in my view, after Robertson walk—inning was called. Hartzog again -- very sorry to say.

Ficc seemed to be breezing with two out in last inning until Heyman hit a blast one hop off the back of the visitors bullpen- the kid has serious pop.

The highlights came in bottom of last inning, Purnell pitching and he was on top of his game- his velo seems to have increased a notch but his movement and location impeccable. A quick two out on 8 pitches including a K and then the play of the game…. a slow roller to short that Rivera charged barehanded and threw off balance for the out! Brilliant.

Great detail 77, Heyman is really coming on. I've seen him hit two other HRs this spring. Ficc is showing good consistency which is exactly what we need in that mid reliever. At this point I'm ready to say that Hartzog is over hyped. Maybe he will snap out of it a month from now but this talk about him as the closer or even a possible starter has never seemed to pan out. At least I haven't seen it.

Hey 1977 a few questions to help us with player tracking.
    1. Was Kurland back at second on the same team with Rivera today?
    2. Since Langford led off, did Robertson play on the other team at center field and lead off as well or else who was?
    3. Did anyone else surprise you where they played like maybe Fabian at first or third?
    4. Did you notice anyone get more than one hit?

    Great recap...thanks for the info.
And I admit I laughed at the Kopp comment on the passed ball. I've heard a lot worse lol....as the dad of a SS my favorite thing was asking him what they called him after an error. His mother never found any of it humorous in the least.

    87,
    1. Yes, Kurland at second with Rivera all 4 innings.
    2. Yep, Robertson CF for blue and hit a sharp liner for single and stole second easily despite a good throw by Heyman.
    3. Fabian at SS all 4 innings for Blue and made a v. good play on hard hit ball off Prevesk bat.
    4. no multi hit game although after Robertson single in 1st, he bunted in 3rd and Talbot (playing for the scratched Lastres) made an excellent quick read and play to just nail him at first. Robertson can run and cover a lot of ground in CF.

It seems part of Robertson's issues with not getting on base here lately is the other team knows what he is going to do. It should be interesting to see after the season starts if he can get back to surprising the defense and get on base more often.

Your P/C matchups made me rethink who might be catching on Sunday. The last time I saw Cags pitch he had Heyman behind the plate. I also looked back to Jan 28th notes from @gator1977 when he saw Cags. Once again Heyman was behind the plate. Since they are not having a scrimmage on Friday I'm trying to go Saturday. If Cags is pitching again I'll see if he still is paired with Heyman. This close to the season might be a tell for the first weekend lineup. It's all just tea leaves until the boiling hot water gets poured.

I woke up this morning and thought if Fabian is batting .400 plus like Sully is saying might Deric end up some at DH? I never thought I'd be thinking that. My head is spinning the closer we get to Day One. If he actually does hit for a high number I'm sure he will start at 2nd or 3rd instead of keeping him as a DH. I still think Halter is a better defender at 3rd and 2nd will be all about who hits the best.

    87—

You have to think at this point if DF’s leather were good enough to be in a starter’s position we would have already seen that. At least to my way of looking at it……

A hot bat is a hot bat, no doubt, but baseball is a game of peaks and valleys that is mastered by the mentally strong—that’s why it’s called a grind IMHO.

I don't see DF starting off based on what I've been told.

I’m all for the best 9……if they all happen to be from Marion County—so be it!

IF (big if) DF is worthy of starting due to bat and ability in field, might he move to 3B and then Halter go to RF? College baseball requires bats from every single (yes pun) position in batting order. Too many 8-7 games. Also, Sully does not like to wear down the starting pitchers unlike the Oh for a Million trips to the CWS (paging Mr. Martin).

Baseball is all peaks and valleys. Great hitters will go on a 2 for 23 slump (great word, isn't it?) and Mario Mendoza types will go on a 9 for 21 run.

I agree and was kidding of course. Just hadn't seen a shout out for Ocala in a while so thought I'd throw one out there.

I do agree on the big if but not RF. I would think its more likely he goes to second unless young Kurland is more amazing than we think. Halter or Kurland might start slow which opens the door for Fabian to get a spot back.
