Is he or isn't he our leadoff batter and starting center fielder? 11 days to find out.

I agree. I'd put Rivera in the 2 hole and let CH or Robertson lead off.

Thanks Ocala. This is some of the best info anyone has found. I'm just glad someone at the PC asked.
Credit Jacob R for some really good quotes from Sully....

"Kevin O'Sullivan said the Gators are hopeful Coppola can be "100 percent for the start of SEC play"
"We’re just bringing Pierce along slowly," O'Sullivan
“You probably have to look at Jac and you have to look at Neely," O'Sullivan said. "Neely had a good year. Slater, you know, Abner’s been throwing the ball a lot better. I mean, we got a lot of options. Like the next week or so, we’ve got to figure out who’s going to be that Sunday starter."

Makes me wonder if they don't want to risk Coppola on "preseason" games and wait for the conference games that matter. Last thing they want is to inflame that back.

Sounds to me like the arm is coming along fine—it’s the endurance and rebound strength of his back that is causing the concern (and rightfully so—backs can’t be toyed with).

Sorry to hear that PC is likely not ready to pitch in competition for at least another 5 weeks. That means he will have not have thrown in scrimmages or competition into SEC season. Likely would need to be nursed back into form with 2-3 innings starts in mid week games like Sully did with Nesbitt and Pogue and hope to have him fit enough to start in SEC action by April? By that time, Cags may have nailed down the Sunday slot with quality performances.

While our cautious approach with PC we all believe is warranted I don’t think he will be put in the typical “no go” category. I expect to see updates/reports on PC from not just pen work but live in-house scrimmages as well.

I will be disappointed/surprised if that’s not the case.

Yep, looks like mid week we may go with the Johnny Wholestaff (or is it Falstaff Beer) approach. Sunday starter? At least we have options (Neely, Abner, Nesbitt, Cac, Arroyo?).

As to batting order revisited, I recall WS champ Milwaukee Braves had Power hitting Eddie Mathews (3B) who batted L as #2 ahead of #3 Hank Aaron. I think another power hitter Joe Adcock was #4.

In the book and movie Money Ball, I recall the A's had to replace Jason Giambi and some other power hitters which created the "man on base" metrics.

When I played baseball eons ago, I lacked 4 of the 5 tools, lack of power, speed, avg, and fielding. I could throw from behind the plate a rope to 2B. My coach would tell me (batting 8th or 9th), just focus on getting on base any way, any how, any thing. So I stood close to home, tried to hit to RF, and never swung at a pitch unless it was right down the pike. Got enough walks, hit a few times, awful batting avg (Mendoza line guy would have been good) but did get one down the pike and hit a game winning double to right !

Now if we can just get a practice schedule for the last weekend before the season starts. I hope to make it to practice on Friday if I only knew the times.

Did some pondering by asking myself, of the list of probable relievers who will have the lowest ERA at the end of the season minimum 10 innings pitched? I get some of you don't put as much emphasis on ERA as other stats and that's fine. It's just easier to track during the season. Looking over my list I was thinking Jameson is going to surprise some people. Sure it's a shot in the dark but might give yall something to ponder and want to throw a name in the hat. Then I checked last year's stats to see who we had left. Here you go if it helps...

    41 Purnell, Blake 2.86
    27 Jameson, Fisher 3.72
    46 Ficarrotta, Nick 3.90
    10 Nesbitt, Tyler 4.59
    49 Finnvold, Carsten 5.00
    50 Ursitti, Anthony 5.06
    13 Slater, Ryan 5.34
    55 Abner, Philip 8.06

Obviously Abner stands to be the most improved. You have to ask, will the lowest ERA come from a new arm like Fisher(here's looking at you 1977), Arroyo or Hartzog? I realize many of you have not seen these guys at practice but you might have been following the updates more closely than we think. So have at it if you have an opinion or remember something from last year. We are only 9 days away and relievers still seem to be our biggest question so think it over and we all might all learn a little something before the season starts.

Edit: Please don't pick Coppola who is the wildcard because right now we can't say mid week starter or reliever or if he will even get us 10 innings. Yes I feel dirty for even saying that.

That’s good stuff-not to “stat” you to death, but if you’ll include their BB’s per 9 innings it will give you a lot more info as to clarity for your expectations. But that’s just me.

Slater is my easy pick for most improved and best ERA. I think Nesbitt could also drop a lot with another year rehab and knowing his numbers inflated with some really bad innings but he was also very effective when he was on....of course that could be said of most of the pen last season lol.

On releif pitchers: examining ERA is good, but I like looking at WHIP for an indication of effectiveness.
    By that standard:
Jameson 1.03 but in only 10 appearances (small sample)
    Ficc: 1.15 (28 games)*
    Ursitti 1.27 (15 games)
    Purnell 1.29 (36 games)*
    Nesbitt 1.29 (20)
    Finnvold 1.33 (6)
    Slater 1.36 (26)
NOTE: Neely who we anticipate will be a starter had an excellent WHIP 1.05 in 21 games--- 11 starts and 10 relief.

Still not clear who will emerge as "the closer" but think it may be situational and all hands early to see who emerges as the top guy(s)
My view: Purnell was solid early, was overused (36 appearances) and visibly tired down the stretch. Plus given that he is not a power pitcher his success depends on movement, location and a deceptive motion. Should not be used multiple times in a series as he was last year, albeit due to necessity.
Ficc also important piece but likely middle relief. And still believe Abner who improved in the final month can be a solid contributor-- maybe mid week starter or situational Left on Left. Everyone in the mix and Neely's numbers are interesting and he may eventually emerge as the guy as Byrne did mid-season. Will be interesting to follow.
