87, have you seen Abner pitch this Spring? I saw him yesterdady but in shorts clearly not pitching. Same with Nesbitt.
On the closer role: remains a concern -- perhaps if you spread the duties around that might be the way to go in the first month-six weeks. I thought Purnell looked good yesterday and he started out well last year but may have been overused some and to use him twice in the same series (as he was several times) is not wise as he doesn't have overpowering stuff but a deceptive delivery and good sinking action that opposing team can pick up on the second time around. He had good location and movement in his outing yesterday. Same with Finnvold nothing overpowering but deceptive with good movement and location.
Glad you can make it out tonight will be good to get your take.

By the way, I was talking briefly with a guy from south Florida who follows top prospects in that area and he pointed out Lastres is barely 19 years old-- was he an early enrollee last year?

Kind of feels like Slater or Purnell as closer, guessing we see varius combos for a while. Ficc to me is the first mid relief guy. Guess Cag is the wild card since we don't know his role/what workload they are comfortable with.

There is nothing that aggravates me more than sloppy play.

Well maybe losing, but nothing else. :D

Pitching appears to be a bit of a concern at this point. Even more so if PC isn't available this season. Hard to ask Jac C to carry load as starter since he hasn't thrown one pitch in college baseball. We also have a lot of kids who need to make a step up this season with their control and secondary pitches. Need someone to step up as lights out closer that we can rely on as well. This used to be our strength.

I saw him for one inning and he did good as I recall. I remember seeing him more in the fall and I felt he is getting back to that original form we saw last pre season when he looked like a very capable reliever. I'm not saying he is yet but I think he has a good chance for a better year.
I have not seen Nesbitt so unknown where he stands.
    Agree on Finnvold.

I've been thinking Slater as well but I haven't seen much of him. Thus I'm still not sure who to expect in the closer role. Purnell could but after last year he makes me wonder how far into the season he can go.

I'm going to ask around today and see if anyone knows about Coppola. I was told last summer the coaches were already looking at Cags stepping into a starting spot this year. I get it doesn't make sense to some but simply passing along what I was told.

I didn't think Lastres was an early enrollee last year. Maybe he was an advanced student going into HS. That or turned 18 in the summer after graduating.

Do they still have dual enrollment in HS? Alan and Kayla both were academic sophomores in college when they graduated HS.

He may fall in this category.

Was Finnvold’s masterful 9 inning performance against Oklahoma in last years regional just a lucky performance or a reason for optimism for him to breakout this year?

    Notes
    No one knew about Coppola
Sproat gave up 2 HR but otherwise good
Neely had another chance but faltered
Jameson with a nice 2 innings to end it
Riopelle with a HR and throw out at second best C of the day
Cags is hitting around the shift effectively
Robertson is not producing from the plate but no other OF is doing enough to replace him
Sproat makes Riopelle's job easy with his control
Thomas had the defensive play of the night but nothing at the plate. Waiting to see if Sully keeps him with the infield starters going forward.
Sproat came out firing with 98 mph, then 99, and then 100. Many players chimed in when that number went up. He was hitting 96 in his 4th inning out.
Neely was at 93. Slater stayed at 90.

Tonight I noticed Riopelle was with Sproat and checked my notes from the previous scrimmage I was at and Riopelle was with Waldrep. Probably no surprise there on either but it seems clear Riopelle is the guy for the two attention getters and Cags will get either Heyman or Lastres. I still don't think BT is the best defensive catcher but if you think about it Sproat makes life for a catcher a bit easier with his new found control. Not going to be many balls in the dirt and BT will know where most of them are going. I do believe Riopelle will give up some runs when we face teams that know to run on him and force some bad throws. He has thrown out a runner in each of the last two scrimmages I was at so he gets some credit back there. There's no doubt BT swings the more productive bat with Lastres second.
    Nothing on Coppola.
    Fabian is the backup SS.

Slater and Jameson each pitched well today in their two innings.
Second base is apparently still up in the air since Sully let Thomas start with the infield starters tonight and he made a defensive gem diving for a one hopper to his right and the throw out at first. Probably the best infield play I've seen in fall or spring.
RF goes to Evans. Yes Prevask is the backup and should see time but limited if we know Sully.

Cags was at first all night tonight and doesn't appear any takes that away because of his bat. You and 74 are probably right that Cags is the DH the day before he starts on the mound but BT will still be behind the plate for Waldrep so it makes me wonder who would Sully start at first.
