Wasn’t Pogue considered a power pitcher? I read an article recently
and was pretty sure it said some guys could take longer than others but between 16-18 months should have velo back. Most were throwing in games at 14 months and throwing 6/7 innings. Unless Jac has had a setback or something has popped he should be good to go before season. We will see in fall ball but I’d be very surprised at 16 months if he’s not throwing competitively.
Pogue and Nesbitt were both at 14-15 months and throwing freely and pitch count pretty much eliminated at 16 months. Not same power as Jac but both were in low 90’s ( Nesbitt was 93-94 occasionally) before surgery.

 

As I have always explained my working knowledge of this subject—power guys are normally in an 18-24 month timeline of rehab in getting back to true full game speed. Every pitcher that I have personally known fitting this criteria has been right there on the 24 month cycle.

Sure, as I have stated before, there is a lot of work/throwing from about the 14 month window that is referred to as “getting your work in”- you have to throw in “game scenarios” which is mostly live in games to break scar tissue up, strengthening the muscles, ligaments, and tendons back to full strength. Plain and simple—that takes time and repetition for the physical parts, not including all of the mental hurdles involved.

There are less velo guys that have been able to get back to their game speed at the 15-17 month window—but I have never known of a true power pitcher to do that.

 

@74nole You obviously know way more than me on this subject. I am curious though if rehab/surgery has changed since Alan’s days.

Justin Verlander went through TJ in late September of 2020 (per the article below) and easily seems back now (ERA is close to 2). That would be about 20 months in his case and he is 38ish so I would hope Jac can heal/recover slightly faster than Verlander. 20 months for Jac would be roughly January (I don’t have a date for his surgery other than the Baseball America article which said the end of his HS season so I am guessing early May 2021).

No argument here with Verlander’s progress in his rehab protocol. Still though, him performing well at 20 months is in line with the 18–24 month window I have consistently referred to and we can be rest assured that JV has received the absolute best rehab conditions that are available.

I would hope that improvements have been made in the medical procedure itself as well as the rehab protocols.

I do not wish anything negative for Cags as he continues with his rehab protocol—I have just learned to temper my expectations for this process to “normal reality” and then applaud anyone who comes back to their true form in less time.

True two way player. Jac probably has 1B locked down so not sure how good of a fit UF would be for him. He was on the USA CNT last year with Barco and Sproat but suffered an injury (TJ) and missed this entire season. Like you said, Likely pretty high draft pick in a couple of weeks so may be much ado about nothing.

2nd or 3rd round definitely seems possible.
