Why should it be around $2? What is keeping that from happening?

It was close to $2.00 a gallon during the Covid shutdown. While the low prices at the pump were great for consumers, a significant number of independent US producers were on the brink of bankruptcy, this is what the president at the time did to save them.
Oil Nations, Prodded by Trump, Reach Deal to Slash Production (Published 2020)
The current price of gasoline is much more attributable to the decision to cut production in 2020 that it is to "the greenie socialist horseshit". It would also probably be lower were it not for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The price of petroleum is based on worldwide supply and demand, European countries are importing more from other OPEC countries to compensate for lower imports from Russia.

Trump... here corporations , how about a 22% tax cut. Corporations... we'll probably lower consumer costs, or pay higher wages.... or get bonuses. Wonder which of those happened?
