Damn, I need to change that (I'm back in St. Pete). Yes, been there. Lots of good seafood (shrimp) in the St. Augustine/Jax area.

Gee...it's been a while, but remember I was born there sooooo:

for Chinese food, the Canton Restaurant, near the Florida Theater and Buchholz Junior High on West Main Street
for Italian food, Manaro's on Hawthorne Road or Leonardo's next to campus (grab a copy of the Independent Alligator and cut out the coupon to get a slice and a beer for $1)
BBQ, of course Sonny's on Waldo Road behind the bowling alley, but also try Prez and Ed's on 5th Avenue (good goat)
and for steak either The Brown Derby or Art's Steak House

    Wait, WHAT????? :(

Anyone remember Mama Lo’s? It was a small place near the Gville Police Dept, on the north side of University. A sweet lady ran it and cooked I believe. Quite amazing southern food. I often got BBQ chicken with two sides and a roll for about $2.25. Yumm.
A lot of UF football players ate there. It was a Gainesville institution.

I never went there, but I heard a lot of good things about her and the restaurant, which was down the street from Prez & Ed's. Strangely enough, if I remember correctly, she was married to Red from Red's 2 Spot across the street, and that was a place that had a terrible reputation for violence.

Definitely remember Mamma Lo's. Don't remember Captain Louies.

I remember Louis' Lunch. I didn't care for it too much, but my Dad and all his buddies and coworkers loved that place.

How about the lunch counter at Wise's drug store? I used to love going there to get me a sandwich and a milkshake.

I used to go to Louis' Lunch off of Depot Street back in the day. Hamburgers with just a little bit of sausage in them.:)

Oh, I loved Captain Louie’s! The fry cook had a unique way of tapping the fry basket with his ladle that was memorable (I’m easily amused)
    Great food there!

I'm with your dad on Louis'....man I forgot about Wise's.

When I was a kid going to Kirby Smith Elementary sometimes my mom would meet me at lunch time. We would walk over to Woolworth's and get club sandwiches.

Somebody mentioned the hotel on the hotel on the NE corner of University and 13th Street. The restaurant in there was Wolfie's.

I also still miss when Howard Johnson's had restaurants, the Corporate Executive Chef back then was Jacques Pepin.

My pops still talks about woolworth's. I think it was before my time, or closed when I was very young. I don't ever remember eating there. He also still talks about family dinners at that hotel. I don't really remember it either.

Skeeter's closed when I was pretty young, but I do vividly remember it.

What was the man's name who played the piano at Wolfie's?

Way too much BBQ talk for Pearl to not even enter the discussion. I also enjoy Vietnamese Grill (also The Spot for Greek) and occasionally Muñecas (in the food park).

    Go GATORS!

What was the name of the "sandwich" place 1 block off university in midtown near Salty Dog run by the Vietnam vet? Loved the spicy chicken wraps.

Pearl had really been struggling after some of the long time cooks retired. No breakfast biscuits :(

Been a bit, so I hope they got things stabilized. Always liked the place.

Maybe the Sandwich Inn on 110 NE 16th Ave just east of main street? Also Mac's is on NW 10th Ave not far from the sandwich Inn.

Yes, sounds like he is talking about Pearls on 441 in Micanopy. It is a gas station, store and BBQ restaurant all in one.

Yes, it has been gone a long time now. Also Pres and Eds BBQ on 5th Ave. Make you sweat when you ate it but excellent at the same time.

Sandwich inn can be good depending on who’s running it. It can be not so awesome for long periods of time.

Mac’s was always one of my favorites. When they sold it, something with the burgers changed. Jon still cooked everyday until very recently, and it’s still good, but it’s not the same. To me it seems like the patties are packed a little looser than they used to be. Reminds me more of a bev’s burger now, which is also good, just not classic mac’s.
