Two things: 1) The natural landing spot for them would be the Ohio Valley Conference so they could take a major step up in competition 2) Can UF take their place in the ACC so we can go from sub-500 to unconquered and undefeated every year without changing a thing.
I think you are greatly over simplifying this. While I do not pretend to know how these media deals work, how can FSU just walk out on their current media revenue deal, join the SEC, and collect their share of the SEC pie without paying it back to the ACC/GOR? Unless their contract with the ACC is terminated, or determined to be void, they owe over $500 million over thirteen years. How does that get paid back, and who pays it? What if FSU joins the SEC, without a termination of the contract with the ACC, and won't pay its share of SEC revenue to the ACC? Does the SEC hold their money, and pay the ACC? What if the SEC doesn't hold their money, and the ACC sues the SEC for interference with their contract? And if the SEC revenue was... say $50 million per year, and FSU owes the ACC $40 million per year, and the SEC pays the $40 million to the ACC, that leaves the clowns with only $10 million per year in revenue which cannot sustain their program. Does FSU's athletic department go belly up? Do they sue the SEC for that? Unless the Holes get released from their contract with the ACC, this whole deal is a legal quagmire that the SEC does not need. And why would the ACC let Clem's son and the Noles leave, knowing their conference will implode? They are going to hold the Noles' feet to the fire to survive.
Why leave? Being in the ACC did not hurt Clemson from winning championships. They have the easiest path to the playoff. Just don’t lose your 1st and 2nd string QBs with 2 weeks to go and you play for the CFP.
IMO, for Clemson and FSU, the only viable option for them is going to be The Big 12, or what will be known as the Big Leftovers. It will be a culmination of the other 3 conferences who want football prestige. The others are too far away. As I posted a long time ago, FSU offers the SEC NOTHING and South Carolina is too poor of a state to have two teams. If we are being correct, it is plausible that an "elite" team will get into the SEC (UNC?) with MSU leaving for the leftover league. Mississippi is even poorer than SC.

As others have, I’ve been thinking about this also. Regardless how it starts going, I would not be surprised at all to see the SEC subject to lots of lawsuits from the ACC as well as FSU ! And it really concerns me that UF could be a subject of them also. FSU probably has a lot of lawyers they would turn to to go after the SEC and maybe UF also.
Hmmm....the old "we signed a contract and now we don't like it" argument. We'll see if the State of FL bails out this circus wagon load of crooks....it may happen, but I think this litigation could be take years to finalize. I hope the SEC is taking note of this behavior by FSU and takes it into consideration when deciding if they want them in their conference. BIG won't touch them because of their lack of academic standards. It would be hilarious if they wound up in the same conference as big brother UCF. All they will most likely end up doing is making a couple of law firms rich.
