Free throw shooting

Here is what I am seeing. He has 2 different ways that he shoots his free throws, one of which is good and the other of which sucks. In both of them, he gets a reasonably good push with his legs. On his good form, he rocks his shooting hand/arm back to the center of his forehead and then forward and releases the ball. On his bad form, he rocks his shooting hand/arm back towards his forehead and then lifts his hand up higher and back over the top of his head before moving his hand forward and releasing the ball. Not only is the latter form terrible, but it screws up the good form because he can’t figure out how hard to shoot the ball on his release on both forms.

And your two replies:

1) Gee, I am getting to be very knowledgeable in basketball. We all know that Tampajack knows basketball and I agree with him. So, I must be learning something reading his posts. Samuel does have 2 different ways that he shoots his free throws. 1) it goes in 2) it doesn't go in.

2) What I see is that on many of his free throws, the ball doesn’t get in the basket and in others the ball goes in the basket.

My theory is it has to do with the tendency for big guys to not use their legs in their FT shot (or the motion is disjointed). The big guys can so easily flick with their wrist, they just never develop the habit to shoot from the ground up from the FT line. Using the big muscles= more consistency. For good free throw shooters, the wrist and forearms aren't the source of the power to get the ball to the basket in their FT shot.

Sounds reasonable. I assume there are mechanical reasons. Means big guys should work more on shooting from am early age. I guess early coaches spend all their time on paint moves and rebounding.

Why do taller guys shoot worse than littler guys? If it's jist physical, long arms and legs, more variability of motion, less coordination then they should practice shooting a lot more from an early age. Both Free throws and long range.

same reason why you don’t see many tall professional golfers, so much more range in motion to go wrong.

Look at Matt Bonner or guys like Kevin McHale. Practiced every day in Bonners case hundreds of 3s and FTs every day (and still maintained a 4.0 gpa)
