Unless the lobby successfully buys off a change in policy after a change in power, to keep the fleece going
accountant cost me $1200 to do my taxes this year, and mine aren't complicated. free filing for me next year...
well if your taxes aren't complicated and you paid $1200 to an accountant rather than just do you own using turbo tax (around $50 plus free filing), why would the fact that you can do free filing make you consider not continuing to pay your accountant $1200?
should have used turbotax this year. thought they were going to pass the Ian legislation so I could claim the losses but the useless congress can't even agree that Ian was a natural disaster that was worthy of being able to claim the taxes. Wound down one side hustle and was hoping the crackerjack accountants could find a way to cut my taxes but I still ended up around 17% net in income taxes which really sucks but it is what it is. That and it was a mere $770 last year and I didn't ask price because it has always been in that range. Of course that is before the local firm got bought out by a national firm. Lesson learned. Being free is just a cherry on top at this point
Its already basically free. Turbo Tax is like $65 for me for fed/state combined. And if anyone thinks a government system will be simpler than the 45 minute Turbo Tax system that they have perfected over years of practice, I have an island to sell. (Tax free in fact!)
I will likely keep paying my pennies to TT. I have my account set up. I dont need to do anything basically but edit a few updates and Im done. No chance the government does this in a way that isnt a hassle. Maybe in a few years, but at the beginning? I doubt it .
My taxes actually got more complicated after Trump "simplified" it. I knew what forms to use and what numbers to put where and could do it myself, after that, had to get an accountant since all the form references changed.
I wonder how complex your taxes can be and still get it free directly. Can you itemize deductions? Can you have a schedule C business? I’ve used H&R Block tax cut for years.
I have the same question. My taxes are pretty simple in the grand scheme of things but I get a K-1 which complicates it for me.
