Exactly!! Some are more work than others, and you handled the most difficult. As a lawyer I deal with some people at their worst and often quite vulnerable. And I don’t think I could do what you did on a regular basis.

But even still, you surely understand the the enrichment of kindness and respect to people who need it most.

Thanks. Burn out rate can be high in these type professions.
I look back fondly on those experiences and the lives I touched. Those people enriched my life and made me a better person.

I deleted some of the personal insults flying back forth between a few of you. The thread is about the University of Florida and its future. That should be a pretty interesting thread.
Yet some of you reduced it to "yeah well you suck ...." back and forth.
    Please stop

He met with the deans last week - apparently they moved the meeting. Several deans left unimpressed. He was defensive - indicating there was nothing to see here about senior leadership exodus and then asking for some ideas about how to recruit talented faculty. Did say he expects finalists for provost to be announced shortly - that is a critical hire for him.

I know very little about that world. But I don't see any real way to both keep the faculty and deans feeling non-threatened and to please his masters in Tallahassee. More so than any substantive change, they want faculty to feel threatened. If he does not do that, he will not be meeting their needs, and will be in steadily growing conflict with them.

Honestly, if you are “talented faculty” elsewhere, and you see all the political nonsense going on in FL, I would have to think it would give you pause.

Hell, I know of some conservative/libertarian professors in other states who are bothered by what's happening here. They too recognize the value of academic freedom.

his job is really hard right now no doubt but his weird behavior isn’t making it any easier on himself. He’s been here 3 months now and has still not provided any strategic vision or direction - so everyone’s guess is he expects others to do that once he hires them and he’s going to do… ??? We don’t know.

Personnel is policy, as they say. If one of the ousted leaders is replaced by a true believer and the “correct” role of the University, look out. Then again, the defenestration and dumbing down of New College may be scalp enough for the campaign trail.

In my perfect world, we would have another 2006-2008, led by another homeschooled Heisman winner, and the athletic success would leave everyone with such a glow of good feeling they would forget the culture war on independent truth. Doesn’t seem likely, although athletic success would leave the university seemingly untouchable illogical as that is. Fine with me

What's so helpful in perpetuating their disorder? Invented pronouns to describe oneself is not about dignity.

It's more than that... "they" use this to explain their non-binary world as their reason to use these other pronouns to describe themselves.

My friend works at a place that suggests folks put their pronouns in their email signature. He said he hasn't seen one set yet that wasn't obvious.

How about ask them why it’s so important to them? How would you know anything about their thoughts? I admit — I’m just speculating that using a pronoun that they feel is important, shows them dignity. Maybe I’m wrong, and it’s all part of a universal practical joke. So what? What did it cost me to try and treat another human decently?

Okay, but on the flip side, it's the smallest of gestures, doesn't hurt anybody, and makes some folks feel accepted. (It also may indeed help one day.)

They have names and genders... it's a done deal. We're not changing the English language to suit people with disorders.

That’s the thing. If you want announce your pronouns, that’s fine. People should respect their wishes. It’s human decency. But suggesting everybody do it for the 1 in 100 that it effects strikes me as mostly virtue signaling.

And complaining about it strikes me as virtueless signaling.
