We are discussing the nature and personality of politicians.
These are people judged on what they say and how they say it to gain popularity.
The very nature of the position should attract narcissistic, self aggrandizing types.
It’s not a stretch to say these people were likely warped long before they entered the realm of politics.

This makes sense, but I think we need to more careful with conflating what makes sense to us and what really is.

It makes sense to many that being a police officer would attract power hungry fascists. And that teaching attracts those that are incapable of holding a productive job. And that law attracts amoral thieves bent only on enriching themselves. But wouldn’t it also make sense that someone who is attracted to helping others would want a job in government, peace keeping, teaching, or law?

Arthur Brooks, former head of the conservative policy institute AEI and author of many great books, says that he personally knows many congresspeople and that most of them are extremely caring and hardworking people trying to make the world better. Now maybe they are fooling Brooks, but then again what makes us think our simple theoretical model that politics must attract bad people is so great?

I hope I don’t have to clarify with you that of course I don’t speak in absolutes. Not all of politicians are selfish people. Mitt Romney, Jimmy Carter come to mind.
These stereotypes you refer to are there for a reason though.

I think most politicians view their constituents as a means to an end. Namely, power and a nice lifestyle. That being said it is in the politicians best interest to keep their constituents happy by "caring" about them.

You mean Trump was lying when he told the mob that attacked the Capitol on 1/6, "We love you"?

I don’t speak in absolutes either, so it seems that we need to get more specific in our claims. I don’t accept the reasoning that stereotypes are always there for a good reason. E.g. I’m sure you’re not going to defend the negative stereotypes of republicans.

But what amount of decency is needed to define government leaders as “good”? If 51% of them are 75% good, would that be enough? Once we agree on a definition, we will then need to agree upon evidence. Clearly, I am not going to accept the simple theory that politicians should be corrupt as evidence that X % actually are so.

I have never seen a study on this question. All I see are polls about what people think, but I wonder why we should accept such polls as reliable when probably none of these people has even such a study either. For this poll, it seems 38% of people think that congress is mostly or all corrupt. Apart from the fact that these people likely have no expertise in the subject, what do we make of the result? Is 38% a lot? What’s wrong with the other 62% that don’t agree?

Politics is a very imperfect science.
I know you’re into stats and such but I’m not sure this is a thing we can accurately measure.
Politicians are measured on how they speak, polls and popularity.
All of these things can change at a moments notice.
See Biden’s stance on the wall. Sometimes you got to roll with an imperfect system. That’s what we have.

Just a clarification. Apparently anyone who is concerned that the likely Republican nominee who is actually ahead in several general election polls despite multiple indictments may be elected to the presidency is afflicted with TDS. Trump himself holds the cure for TDS. He can simply withdraw from politics as well as ceasing his inflammatory posts on social media. If that happens the incidence by TDS would be reduced by 90%.

Who in the GOP should we be posting about on a politics forum if not the multiple indicted and advocate for stupidity currently well ahead in GOP polls?

Meh. Just because it is a common occurrence that Trump’s inner circle thinks he’s terrible doesn’t make it less newsworthy. It just means it has happened so often that some folks, apparently you, are not bothered at all by it. He’s the leading candidate in the GOP.

They believe “Politicians don’t care about American citizens, you’ll just have to deal with it”…but if I was to say “Police officers don’t care about American citizens, you’ll just have to deal with it” they’d vehemently deny it and throw a hissy fit LOL

Thinking that most people are good is fine. They are.

Thinking that most politicians are good is somewhere between naive and foolish. They aren’t.

You lost me at "appearing on ABC's The View".

Starting posts based on Huffpost & some site called Intelligencer mentioning something someone said on THE VIEW too funny.
