Born in Gainesville. Grew up in Pensacola and was a standout football player at Pensacola High School.
It is noteworthy that he was made the A.D. immediately after the 106 NCAA violations. We needed someone of character and integrity to restore those qualities to the program and he did his job. He set the table for All the great things that happened for Gator athletics under Foley. Like each of our Heisman winners, I am a preachers kid. In about 1965 we were living in Ocala and my dad helped to organize a Christian men’s dinner event and managed to have Bill Carr, Gene Peek and Larry Rentz as guests and speakers for the event. I wrangled a seat near Carr at the head table. He very politely and generously interacted with this excited fifth grader throughout the meal with no hint of annoyance. A true class act and gentleman.
