What political nonsense? You seem to be defending Big Gov Ron's thought police here. He has been doing real damage to the FL education system.

My kids are grown, but I want my 6-year old granddaughter to learn real
American history rather than fake American history, and I do not want to hide from her the fact that some kids have 2 mommies and some kids have 2 daddies.

Morality is knowing the difference between right and wrong and doing the right thing. Advocating affordable health care for all Americans is doing the right thing. Trying to reverse climate change is doing the right thing. Continuing to support Trump’s claim that he won the presidency is the wrong thing. Trying to destroy our democracy by creating laws that can provide for a different outcome than voted for by the people is the wrong thing. The Republicans come out on the wrong side of so many of these moral issues.

pandering to racists will only embolden them and 'perpetuates' racism in society.

Damage to the system for stopping certain things that you don’t agree with? I know plenty of teachers that agree with him. You don’t, so what he’s doing is damaging. I get it.

The legislation wasn’t stopping anything. It was solving a problem that didn’t exist which is now creating a chilling effect for teachers. The same thing is going on at the university level. On top of that, DeSantis keeps labeling this crap as anti-woke, which is absurdly divisive. In DeSantis’s sick mind, anyone who is woke is the enemy. So, if you recognize that there is prejudice in the system against blacks, gays and other minorities, you’re woke which makes you the enemy.

This is just proof positive the Left has so greatly tortured the meanings of Right and Wrong they’ve become indistinguishable. Equating climate change policy with morality?

By the way, I noticed you left out the killing of the unborn, allowing open borders encouraging human trafficking and the free flow of deadly drugs, and the availability of puberty blockers without parental consent for our kids before they can even get a drivers license.

I learned “real” American history in our public school system, both the shameful and proud moments of our nation’s past. But it taught lessons of suffering, loss, healing, and unity. Not divisiveness, victimhood and recrimination.

I’m sorry your teachers and/or other important folks in your life did you such a disservice for you to feel this way.

Idk, I wouldn't exactly call $50k a year for summers off as well as spring break, Christmas vacation and various other holidays, in addition to vacation days and a pension "little pay". You're not going to get rich but it's not some poverty level job in an area where the median home is $248k.

I pulled these numbers from quick Google searches so if I'm way off feel free to call me an idiot. Seems like the teacher would rather setup a lawsuit than teach. Good riddance.

I don't want to hide my 3 year old from that either, but also don't want him taught that's it's normal. It's not. It's definitely ok and should be accepted, but it's not normal.

I also don't want him taught about transgender people in 3rd grade, for example, as that has nothing to do with anything of substance in the world.

I've had enough of Trumpism. I liked DeSantis his first year, after that he became a trumpie ho.

FL is generally one of the worst states in the nation at teacher pay.

Quality of life is a positive trade-off, and I don’t disagree Pensacola is probably easier to swing on such low income vs. South FL. But I wasn’t even being that granular, I was just making the simple argument of low pay + crazy right wing politics of late (on top of dealing with your everyday looney tunes parents). Seems like a lot of negatives going on that would discourage people from entering the profession. Basically, driving good teacher to other states instead of luring more here.

Let’s just state what this is. This appears to be a segregated school with 79% black students. They made a black teacher take down posters of people that should be inspirational. Instead of making sure these kids have the same opportunities, we get… whatever this is.

Those are the history lessons they want to take away. Even thought CRT isn't taught as a class before college. Social and emotional learning has also always been there. Google "The Dumbing down of America". They have succeeded and still aren't happy.

My DIL is a teacher. She works every Sunday to get ready for the week as well as working until 5-6:00 every day to look over the kid's work for the day. That's after getting to school by 7:30 am. She takes enrichment classes during the summer so she can be the best teacher she can be, even though she is consistently rated "effective" after they come to her class and sit in the back watching to see what kind of teacher she is. Dealing with parents all year that are not involved in their kids school work, yet think they should be getting A's. Unruly kids and a mix of kids who should be in special ed mixed with kids that are gifted. How do you come up with a lesson plan for that and still be considered effective by the powers that be? She has been an elementary teacher for 10 years and makes just over the $47,500 Desantis is so proud of. With the time she puts in, she might make $25/hour. Yeah, not bad.

On the other hand, my sister with no degree works in accounts payable for an attorney, she makes $24/hour.

Edited to add that she spends the last 2-3 weeks of summer getting her classroom ready for the kids. Teachers need more.

Damage to the system by making it very un-attractive to be a teacher in a public school system.

Yeah, please let every parent with an axe to grind sue me .... where do I sign up!

I don't disagree with you really, just don't think the teacher would just quit unless he's been thinking about it for a while. Seems like a lawsuit setup to me and I don't really believe the story to begin with. Fwiw I'd be in contact with the school board where I to have a child in this district to find out what happened for myself as the story as presented is completely unacceptable.

I have a teacher in the family as well and I know the hours worked are highly variable. Good teachers do spend lots of time building lesson plans, prepping, grading, etc... But average to bad teachers very much do phone it in. Anyways, even with the extra work teachers do get extremely generous benefits. I'm not debating that teachers shouldn't be paid more, they definitely should in most cases, but that 50k isn't some throwaway job either.

Her entire team puts in the same hours. Anyone who goes into teaching today is doing it for the love of the children. Now, if they have been doing it for say 35 years, they maybe are cutting corners. In that case it's time to retire.

I'm sure there are people who want to be teachers because of the "hours". Must be a heck of a shock when they see their effectiveness rests entirely on the time they put into it. Not to mention they have to come out of pocket for everything in the classroom.

DeSantis has done a very good job with increasing teacher salaries. Last year, the average starting salary for teachers in Florida was up to $44,040 which is now 16th highest in the country. Yes, average salaries (like they are for many other occupations in Florida) are lower for teachers but that will obviously change as the starting salaries continue to jump along with DeSantis continuing to push legislation to put more money in all teachers pockets.

    Sorry
But this story doesn’t ring a 100 percent true. My guess is there is much more to the story. Was he told not to put posters up on that side of the room or not to use double sided ape. Was he told to get pre approval before putting up posters of anyone? There could be a number of reasons why the posters whee taken down. But maybe… maybe it was blatant racism. I would think we’d have an interview, follow up story.. something.
