Savvy political move from the Florida Supreme Court. Released its opinion overturning the abortion protections in the right to privacy at the same time it allows the abortion amendment (by a vote of 4-3) to go on the ballot. Marijuana will also go on the ballot.

They got 2 out of 3 right. The two initiatives will drive voter turnout and the pro-choicers will not be voting for the guy who boasts about overturning Roe.

Past experience suggests it is a looooong way from having voters approve a ballot initiative to it becoming law as it has to pass through the gerrymandered safe-district Republican legislature who care little for the will of the people.

The abortion initiative is different. It won't require legislation to largely implement it's goals, it will be used to strike down existing Draconian laws.

The weed thing is an entirely different story.

Not surprised about the opinion to overturn abortion protections, but I am surprised they allowed both on the ballot. Doesn't mean either will pass, but let the voters decide.

It's going to be really close. 60% is a tough threshold to me. Knowing how the Florida legislature works they will figure out a way to block them even if the initiatives pass

Challenge with the abortion initiative is even if we get to 60%, there's no guarantee that the DeSantis-controlled Florida Supreme Court won't just gut it.

The one thing that makes Florida different is that we have a bunch of boomer hedonists who also have reactionary politics. The Villages writ large. Free love and drugs for me but also build prisons and back the blue lol.

Which initiative has the better chance in your opinion?

That's pretty much what happened with restoring felons right to vote, correct?

And initiative 4 (?) from 2014 that would have created a pool of money from doc stamps for conservation of Fl lands. Was approved by 75% of FL voters Flagrant case that I’m still pissed about.

One of the convicted felon roadblocks centered around what the completion of a sentence meant. The powers that be wanted that to mean all fines and costs paid in addition to the incarcerative portion of the sentence. IIRC it also required enabling legislation which the abortion initiate shouldn't require.

They will certainly try, but I think the nature of this imitative puts the citizens in a better place.

Love the Villages. Just too big for me and the wife.

    Party on boomers.

It’s like that here too in Western NC - maybe to a lesser degree. The best MJ I’ve had here was supplied by a MAGA hat wearing, gun snuggling, ammosexual who lives a couple of doors down. I’ve been surprised at the RW boomer attitudes about certain things.

Adult use. I would be shocked if it doesn’t pass.

Don't forget that this ruling will cause Florida's 6 week, fake heartbeat ban to take effect. That will piss off the pro-choice people even more.

Will it drive voters? That’s the big question. I guarantee the conservative base will throw huge resources at defeating both initiatives. There’s going to be some nasty attacks on the way …

Justice Meredith Sasso And Renatha Francis both dissented. While it takes 60% to pass the amendment they did not approve it only takes 50% of the vote to remove them from office in the same election. Hopefully they will both be removed
