Easier? Maybe. Less expensive? Much. I liked the small class sizes in JC or Community College. 800 people in an auditorium for a core engineering class at UF was distracting. ME classes were much smaller back then.
Guidance counselor friend of ours at a South Florida High School told us her top student was accepted to UF. 4.0 GPA but a 1240 SAT. There’s more at play than standardized test scores.
Did the ACT hurt her or the level of classes taken maybe? 4.8 suggests advanced course taken so I doubt that.
I had one get in out of state with an academic scholarship and was super happy at UF. I had another one not even apply as a stretch school and is super happy at his college. Seems to usually work out just fine. Now I have 2 colleges to watch on Saturdays and a wardrobe of orange and blue and black and gold.
I was a finance major but never enjoyed math. I dropped business calculus at UF when I was struggling and took it at PJC in the summer and got an easy A. The difficulty was night and day to me for that class at least. The concepts weren’t that hard but they could make it as easy or hard as they wanted depending upon the complexity of the algebra required to find the derivative. Just my own limited experience.
Only 3% OF UF students are from out of state. How many foreign nationals are actually displacing American legacies? University of Florida Admissions | StudyPoint's Guide to University of Florida Admissions
That is a couple hundred more students who actually earned their way into the university. Also, most of that money is wasted on semi-pro athletes and not benefitting the majority of the students. I am sure that those really nice apartments that the football players are living in are really a necessary expense for an institution of higher learning.
Cool. I'd rather have a football program than a couple hundred more students who "earned" their way into UF. I imagine there are a lot of other folks who feel the same way.
Bingo! I had no ties to UF. My dad grew up in Poquoson VA. Mom a military brat born in CA. They met after my dad decided to go military after graduating from the University of Richmond. Met in Austin TX as my mom graduated from North Texas State. After my dad retired from Eglin AFB. We stayed in the area as I had created friends in the military community of Niceville FL. I never stepped on the University of Florida campus until “Preview” after I was accepted. Met the Love of my life at UF and got two degrees there (also got two degrees from UF). It will be interesting to see. As my oldest does want to go to UF. I might be wrong. But she should meet every requirement possible and then some. And I can assure you. Her parents are not giving money to UF. Even as graduates. I get times change. And while we can brag about the academics. We are losing the State Kids who are 100% qualified imo. And trust me. There are a lot of qualified applicants that will still be rejected even if the criteria is changed. But it is a weird feel. Going to be interesting as always going forward.
You talkin bout me again? LOL I did that many years ago. Got out of high school with average grades applied to UF and got turned down. Went to a Jr College and flunked out. A few years later I was married with 2 kids and finished my AA while working and taking night classes. Transferred to UF and graduated with honors. My path was actually even longer that it sounds because I transferred to UF with basic math & science credits and I was going into engineering so I had to take calculus, advanced physics & chemistry classes to get into the upper division courses I needed. Funny thing is I actually graduated from UF 1 credit short. I was 30 years old and was going to have to take another semester to finish. I went in and explained to the dean that I was 30 with a family and although I had plenty of credits some of them did not line up with my curriculum. He looked over my Jr College classes and said I took a Surveying class that he could give me upper division credit for. I'm sure he was just being a nice guy.
Long sorry… But UF just completed a capital fundraiser that netted nearly 5 billion dollars. Donations are going fine, even if a few families opt out. But to the point being persisted in this thread, my family is the opposite. I was the first to get in and go to UF. Maybe I displaced one of those long time families, who knows. But I do know that there are now 8 of us in my extended family who have gone there (we’re 10/10 in admissions both undergrad and grad school, though we are about to miss on one I think). And we all donate. And that’s the point. You’re assuming the new kids coming in won’t be as dedicated to the school as previous generations. I think that’s a questionable argument. If anything, what is gained with new families joining the fraternity outweighs the small number of people who won’t give anymore because their kid got rejected. If the argument is that out of state numbers have increased, they have though not by a lot. And shut them out and tuition goes up to offset their loss. Not to mention, one of the central ideas of college is to interact with people from other places and backgrounds. Creating a florida bubble makes it a far lesser experience, which doesn’t help them long term. And especially for grad school, bringing in the best from other places means more research funding, which benefits the whole state. Last year UF pulled in 1.25 billion dollars. How many thousands of jobs is that? In reality, politicization of the school in both directions is a far bigger threat to its long term health and standing than the things being discussed here.
I had an Introduction to Dynamics professor (taught by the Aerospace Engineering Department at the time) give a 3 question test that everyone but one student failed. I got a 47! I’ll never forget that! LOL…He was a genius but not teacher material. Mind you there were only 3 tests and then a final! 12 questions total for the class. I ended up with my first “C-“ and GERD. It all depends on the person presenting the material IMO.
I remember I took one test with Denslow, got around that score and got a B. His test curves were legendary.
Feel good to be an @$$? Instead of posting something of substance that could explain it like @StrangeGator …you decide to be an @$$. Sadly par for the course…
When Matchen was president he used to talk about how much money athletics gave to academics. Last time I checked it was about 30 million. Not sure what’s going on currently. Here is an article about 2023. The UF athletics department budget increased $19 million in the 2023 fiscal year - The Independent Florida Alligator
Our kids parents were both First Generation Gators. And I just want them to create the path they desire. My oldest is a sophomore in high school. It will be fun to watch the process as she has so many things going for her. UF is definitely a potential goal and if accepted I would bet she goes there. However…I would not be shocked if she decided to go elsewhere. Just a super proud dad!
