    Just so everyone doesn’t think I’m a Publix snob I just spent $124 at Winn Dixie. Wife had a haircut close by one. And yes,,, prices were better than Publix. But I still had to stop by Publix as WD turnips were mushy and they didn’t have the fish dip we like.

    A purely demand-side definition of "fleecing" makes the term basically never apply. For example, if somebody told a potential customer that the bottle of water that he is selling will make the customer fly, that isn't fleecing the customer because the customer was willing to pay for it, according to the way you are presenting the concept here.

    I think that the concept of fleecing has to be a bit deeper than whether or not a customer is willing to pay for a product and goes more into how information is utilized by a seller.

    How in the hell is Winn Dixie still open? Haven’t been in one in years, but every time I did, it was a ghost town.

    Pretty soon, walmart will make you stock a shelf before you can shop.

    Will my Winn-Dixie become Aldi?
    Not necessarily — some Winn-Dixie stores will be converted into the Aldi format. Those that do not will continue to operate as Winn-Dixie stores. “Aldi is evaluating which Winn-Dixie stores will convert to the Aldi format,” according to an Aldi spokesperson. “We’ll convert a significant amount to the Aldi format after the deal is approved, over the course of several years. However, a meaningful amount of Winn-Dixie stores will continue to operate under their respective banners. With this acquisition, our focus will be to continue to serve Southeast shoppers and provide unchanged access to quality, affordable groceries to more markets in the Southeast.”

    The WD near me stays fairly busy. The Jacksonville paper was doing stories about WD's struggles a few years ago. I remember one analyst saying that it was in 'the dreaded middle ground.' Not as cheap as Walmart and Aldi, doesn't have the customer service that Publix does. There were also comments that its management just isn't very good. Maybe that's why they've had bankruptcies and now have been sold at least twice.

    A couple of other thoughts:

    Publix isn't fleecing its customers by charging more than some stores do. If people are willing to pay a little more for the service, selection and ambience, that's the customer's decision. And it's obviously working. You don't see Publix closing stores.

    Finally, I made a quick reference to Dollar Tree earlier. Mostly in jest. BUT, if you are looking to get a bargain, the ones near me receive bakery goods that I assume have been taken off other shelves but seem perfectly fresh to me. Arnold bread, which sells for more than $5 in stores. Entenmann's baked goods. For $1.25.
    You just have to know when they're delivered to the store.

    Our Dollar Tree is Tuesdays and Thursdays for cheap bread. It's kind of a madhouse those mornings, but the deals are that good. And the day old bread store moved locations to 15 minutes further away, so Dollar Tree got crazier

    I agree to an extent, but I don't believe anyone is walking into Publix without the realization that their prices are higher and are willing because of the offer.
