Just hoping for a 2007 to 2008 type of leap for the defense this year to next year, or at least this year to 2025.

I truly believe the truncated games are obscuring how bad the D actually has been post Charlotte game. I was chalking it up to anomaly vs KY, now there is enough evidence to convict them of being bad.

If you think about it the best our D looked was against our O in the O&B game. :D:eek::(

I’m not trying to be a negative-nelly, but my eyes see a defense that is bad. I generally believe in statistics, but statistics don’t tell the story about how Georgia shut down its offense for the second half. Utah tried to burn clock in the second half. Kentucky? Let’s just all agree to erase that from our minds.

I was at the SC game and watched them march up and down the field. We got some stops at key moments, and man that made the day fun.

I do agree with you, however, that we are very young. I am not sure if our bad defense is schematic or because our guys are not yet physically developed to be starting a SEC defense. I’m not saying we should fire everyone; I’m saying that the status quo is woefully inadequate. Because, as of today, we have a bad defense.

Next week is a great opportunity for us to improve.

Football is a game of 11 men, sure, but not all carry equal weight. For example, a spectacular QB can make up for 1 average receiver.

However, where you simply cannot have many weak links is on the line. Watch our games and see UGA 5 OL pass block our 4 DL fairly easily (Princely gets the extra). Nobody punches thru. Our blitzing linebackers (who are small) get picked up by a running back, whereas Georgia blitzing linebackers ran over our RB. Our right tackle’s performance was unbelievable.

Our lines, their physicality, is THE fundamental reason for us losing this past Saturday (and all year). Is that partially coaching or strength training? Likely, and certainly if coaching includes recruiting (which it does). Can’t attribute the quote (Charlie Pell?), but “God smiles on teams with good defensive tackles.” Fix the lines and the coaching is gonna look very different.

I wasn’t clear. I do not think at all that you think. I was referring to the people that you were replying to. I should have started my reply to you with “ I agree”. My bad.

I don’t pay too much attention to the roster during games, but have we been putting any of the freshman DBs out there? I know the lack of push from the DL is hurting the back end, but they don’t seem all that physical.

I for sure thought our D was going to get to Beck (multiple times during the game)..... Even if we had to blitz, you gotta get to the QB.

    GO GATORS!!!!

Our defense is over achieving this year. Which is a compliment.

Getting rolled by good teams and lack of turnovers are telling.

The 3rd down defense improvememt shows the train is back on the tracks and restored most of my sanity.

Think this is particularly true with the younger players. Add some strength and physical maturity they will fill more aggressively while tackling. To many times they have the opportunity to come down hill hard and blow a play up for a loss. But they end up coming in a little more passively and the play ends up being a 3-4 yard gain and a first down. Right now got a few too many that don't seem to be embracing contact.

Perhaps a reflection of a weak pass rush and/or tackling but the lack of defensive turnovers is a problem.

SEC is a LOS league and we are not there yet. Which means no qb pressure, no tackles behind los, and places our dbs at a disadvantage. We need to get stronger and faster. That alone will improve our D. Next year’s group should help but still will be young.
OL seems to be of the mold of past bama teams big. However less talented. Our guys are big, slow and not very physical. Is it lack of talent, coaching, development or all of the above?

Only 1 pass rusher. Only 1 true LB. Freshmen at safety. Upper classmen at corner have been really inconsistent. This is a defense that just hasn’t been able to put it together since the Tennessee game.
