Kiffin had already accepted the HC job at FAU and was working both jobs. Saban let him go to concentrate on FAU. Steve Sakisian was there to step in as OC.
Here’s what Nick Saban said on ESPN about Lane Kiffin’s dismissal

The problem with hiring staff and keeping the old guys around is it wasting $ that could have theory went to the players

It might be harder to be the best SEC football coach because there is only one of those each year. But, it's not harder to be a good coach than a good rocket scientist. Not even close. I know some of both. Space is much harder than football. Don't fool yourself.

Off topic but Dan Mullen was too loyal to staff, even players, in the pecking order and refused to make changes. Cost him his job IMO.

Not off topic. He was loyal to staff that weren't very good. S&C as well as Grantham. If you are going to be friends with someone, take Dabo with Brent Venables as your DC or SOS and Stoops. Problem is when you have those good relationships with good coaches, they are going to move up and you have to find replacements.
I don't really see anyone poaching Napier's staff.

This. Look at Kirby’s staff and who has become a HC and some are already on short list for HC after this season. No one’s is looking to BN’s staff for a HC.

A general football coach- sure. there are 1000s of those.
But I was talking about a top notch SEC football coach.

    That definition, to me is.
    1) Competes for titles every year.
    2) Doesn't get fired. That eliminates Richt, Les Miles, Jimbo Fisher.
The pay is great but the number who succeed is miniscule.

    It must be very difficult.

Completely agree with this. The "We'll play both guys" might be a function of indecisiveness as the article implies. It might be that he thinks a 2-QB system is the best way to win this game. Or it might be that he has made up his mind but doesn't want aTm to know what he's going to do. Let's see how the game plays out, then we'll have a very good idea of which scenario it is.

Napier has a well established culture of poor preformance having no consequences. It's not harsh, it's an observant article of a losing program.

As I recall at the time, Kiffin had already been hired by FAU, and Saban believed Kiffin had divided attention. If memory serves, the team bus left Kiffin behind on two occasions at Saban's order because Kiffin was speaking to media or something like that. I don't think it was because Kiffin wasn't "good enough." He just wasn't towing Saban's line, and Saban was not going to have it.

    JMHO:

While I won't say he doesn't care about winning, I would say he is mainly playing with Monopoly money and so the implications for failing at this gig aren't that dire. He is obsessed with the process and expects the results to just manifest. I don't see a sense of urgency.

I assume the ones we moved still had more years on their contracts so it was a sunk cost, if we’re going to pay them might as well have them do something
