FHP rushing to hire more troopers in Central Florida amid shortages

Do you like not solving crimes, barely working (while somehow milking overtime from the taxpayer) and occasionally employing violence without accountability and retiring with a generous pension well before most Americans? ... step right up!

 

FHP ranks 47 of 50 in pay. The average salary is 40K to clean up horrific crash scenes. They don't make NEARLY enough.

 

Clearly, the Republicans in our government have defunded the police!

 

Agreed its not enough but depending on your source, they average more than 40k per year.

I think that it depends on the area of Florida. Regardless, still way short of what they should be making.

 

Even at $52,825 the average reported in the link they're still not earning very much. While a trooper residing in a rural area could probably get by on that salary, it would be impossible to support a family in any urban area in the state absent a working spouse/partner with a decent salary and/or a second job.

Agreed. And it does not take into account the benefits package they get. Being front lines they can retire with close to full pay after 30 years. Not sure if they have done anything with Drop but that as well…

 

I live in Virginia. For comparison, the salary of a trooper in Virginia is $57,541 a year after graduating from the academy. For a trooper residing in Northern Virginia where the cost of living is higher it's $71,897 12-months after graduating from the academy. Not surprising why there is a shortage of troopers in Florida. Again for purposes of comparison in Miami-Dade the salary range for police officers is $56,882.02 (probationary) to a max of $100,333.40. Just a guess but part of the problem maybe troopers are leaving the state to take higher paying positions with local police departments especially in urban cities/counties.

 

Watch out with those radical notions that the rate of pay has something to do with the attractiveness of a particular job. Remember, if it is difficult to fill a position, it's because people don't want to work. Whatever you do, never consider paying more.
