Good Netflix show on Nolan Ryan. Most interesting to me was the speed of his fastball. Measured in his youth at 99-101 mph, but with new technology, the older equipment has proved to be off about 5 mph. So he'd be hitting 102-106 mph today. Threw 7 No No's. Robin (punching bag) Ventura did not give interview of the hard noogies Nolan gave him for charging mound. Above is per my memory
The best. Filthy, even in his 40’s. Watched him pitch a game at 41 or 42 and he sat 97-98. Touched 100 at that age!!! Coolest thing of all was that he threw that 12 to 6 curveball probably 25 to 30 times. Definitely not an egotistical dude as he realized that was his hammer at that age. Hardest throw we’ve seen the jest 30 years. I wouldn’t argue with 105-106 at all in his younger years And not just once or twice.
7 no-hitters at the MLB level— Let me say that again—SEVEN NO-HITTERS AT THE MLB LEVEL— Let that sink in for a minute……Damn!
5714 career K's is also something I will never see topped. IIRC one year he was 8-16 and lead the National Leauge in ERA. Talk about a lack of run support.
I knew savvy baseball people that saw Walter Johnson and Bob Feller pitch live from good seatrs. According to them they were at Nolan's level or maybe faster. This is rare company to be in. I have no idea who was actually the fastest. All I know is that they were all hella fast. My dad saw Bob Feller on opening day at Comiskey. IIRC he threw one of his no-no's. He said that the umpire called balls and strikes from what he heard and not what he saw because his piches were so fast nobody could see them.
I liked it for the most part. Unfortunately, I felt it wandered into a bit of fanboy territory as it went on. More adulation piece than documentary.
