But unfortunately 24-21 also happened 2 games prior when FSU's defense picked off our Heisman trophy QB and same 3 NFL receivers three times and went up 17-0 in the 1st Qtr. I feel sick even typing that out but it shows that a great defense with good game plan can also best a great offense with a great QB. We had an awesome receiving core and superb QB in Trask in 2020 but our defense was putrid and we wasted our season with that offense as that QB and Co. Wasn't enough to overcome a bad defense. Balance is what is ultimately needed to be consistently successful because eventually you'll come across someone who has your number if your team isn't a double edged sword. A great offense will eventually run out of gas with a sorry defense in support (see the 2020 team) and a great defense will eventually get outdone with out the support of a potent offense to put points on the board (see the 2012 team)
Oh , I love defense and line of scrimmage football. It’s the basis for success no doubt. A great qb is the equalizer though,
So what happened with our 2020 season. Not many better season performances than Trasks with ,pitts, shorter, Grimes, toney and Co. Yet our own defense did us in.
Our defense was garbage and our running game was suspect. Run the ball and stop the run. If you did that, Trask would have smoked their asses. LSU won with maybe an average sec defense. Maybe all we needed was average that year.
But solely having a bona-fide QB doesn't do it which was the point I was making in Response to yours. Simply having a good recieving corps and a great QB will win you a bunch of games but will also get you in a bunch of trouble if you run into a team that exposes your unbalanced team who can not only also throw the ball but can execute other phases as well. Balance. Plus I do love a hard hitting shutdown defense. Just something about suffocating another team that is so rewarding, moreso than a 42-48 shootout IMO.
The georgia safety smoked our all world TE with a dirty hit knocking him out of 3 games one of which was LSU
Line of scrimmage of course is the basis for good football. My point is that no defense is holding LSU’s offense from a few years ago to a low scoring game. The rules have changed in favor of offense so far that even a great defense like Georgia had last year is getting 40 dropped on them by that lsu team. The midget from Georgia was probably on an overall more talented team but Burrow and company still probably take that game. God help us if Georgia gets an elite qb right now.
…And they have another one on the way. It’s not from a lack of them trying. We can only hope to see Kirby bungle that room up again.
as i'll always say, i've been getting active in this part of the site since 2018 and you've ALWAYS preached OL/DL play and/or recruiting and how paramount it is to recruit great at those positions or FORGET about winning big consistently.
The way I look at it is for football, Georgia is our #1 rival. All sports, school, fans, etc. FSU is #1. I mean I don't give a sh!t about Georgia baseball, etc. But I want FSU to loose at EVERYTHING.
FUN FACT 1 - There’s more to that rout than Spurs going to the shotgun and having more time to game plan. FSU had a bunch of players with food poisoning leading up the game and of course it affected their stamina [cue Taggart and dehydration clip]. So some FSU fans were wondering if the players got food poisoning from Warrick Dunn’s mama who fed a lot of them or was it foul play? Either way, that FSU team wasn’t the same one we faced in Tallahassee. FUN FACT 2 - I was at that game and I believe that was the first time the band rolled out the now-banned “Gatorbait” chant. Can anyone in the band in ‘96 confirm? Went to most the games that year and I don't recall hearing the chant before then.
I don’t know about a band led chant nor when it started but chanting “Gator bait” when the visitors took the field was used in the 60s. I still like it better than booing.
I believe we dropped the "lets" in "let's go Gators," and we were the first to just say "Go Gators!" Now every team dropped the "lets' part in their exclamation of/for their team. Go Gators! We were the first to change that phraseology. I remember Gatorbait before that game. We should bring back Gatorbait!
