No, any US citizen who wants to go into the military and can qualify if free to do so. If a legal migrant wants to go into the military and can qualify, they can go as well. They can earn the quick pathway to citizenship for their service. US citizens don't need that.

So now we're over to a "quick pathway to citizenship" (despite suggesting 3yrs). Are you now saying that military service should be optional for migrants? BTW a green card and English fluency are required for military service in the U.S.

Quit nitpicking good gosh, I suggested 3 years of military service for legal immigrants qualifies you for citizenship. I also said "can qualify" which would mean English fluency and a green card if those are required.

-OR- you proposed a ridiculous expectation w/o thinking it through. Sounds great to people like you to require immigrants 3yrs military service. You didn't say "can" in your original suggestion, which was:

I would like to see a program where so many years of military service, let's say 3, qualify you for citizenship.

None of the people you are referring to . . . zero, zip, zilch, nada of 'em have green cards. So yeah, I nitpicked your suggestion because it is fraught with issues, not to mention inequity.

Why would legal immigrants need 3 years of military service?

Perhaps you meant undocumented immigrants could earn a pathway w/3 years of service. That would sound reasonable, but even then cases where it wouldn’t make sense. Like if a DACA student graduated in nursing (hell there are 200 medical doctors), not sure dropping them in the military is practical. More like just putting them through more nonsense.

I’ve always said the military should be a viable pathway, basically automatic citizenship, but it’s not like we need hundreds of thousands that don’t really want to be there or are perhaps of no real use to the military. I suspect making it volunteer would help the military fulfill its recruitment goals. The DACA grads presumably would all have decent skills and intellect (or at least aren’t different expectations from a pool of American students). So the nurses could work at the VA system (civilian) or something. Just not sure it’s a good idea to make it compulsory for them to stay vs just letting them “serve” in the free market.

I like that he’s upset with pointing out the possible flaws in his thinking. I.e the general purpose of the forum he moderates.

How dare you engage in a discussion! Nitpicking! On a message board!!! Message boards are for trolling da libz. Duh.

Military service should be a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers. So should education. One tour with an honorable discharge, or a bachelor's degree or a tech degree in high demand should grant DREAMers citizenship. We have labor shortages for things life diesel mechanic, so if a DREAMer goes to UTI and graduates, that should be rewarded.

As for non DREAMer undocumented, guest worker program for a few years. Then allow them an option to renew or go home. Out of options, then it's a pathway to citizenship or return home.
