Your first problem is you are far too salty, as you first said, for a topic that is as inane as the use of some famous song as a “tradition.” But…I know people love their Petty like they love their momma so I won’t take any offense.

But, I’d wager to say the Universities in Seattle, Minneapolis, and probably quite a few other schools have iconic bands that are associated with it, acts in the upper echelons of music. And they are also free to use that music…I mean, who wouldn’t be pumped to some Dylan at a game (Note: they wouldn’t).

But I think you keep missing my point, I’m saying we need traditions/music that bring out that crazy. Maybe I should have stated that clearly in the first post, but Petty songs aren’t that.

You can call it “fake juice” or whatever, but the crowd singing this "real juice" is very ho hum and mild.

Legend has it that if you play Molly Hatchet loud enough, any sleeves you have on at that moment will instantly blow off.

They specifically did it as a tribute for his death. Originally meant to be a one time thing.
It then turned out to be really cool so we kept it going.

The Eagles used that song for the first time one day after the Gators did for the first time.

With regard to UF’s playing of “Won’t Back Down” before the 4th quarter ….. don’t forget that some other guys - Blair, Tench, Lynch - on that song had ties to Gainesville. And Mike Campbell was from Jacksonville. For many reasons, it is a nice tradition for UF ….. and the Eagles.

We should have played "Take It Easy" while Dan Mullen was here.

I do understand your point -- that "I Won't Back Down" isn't a full on barn burner that gets the crowd into a frenzy based on the energy of the music alone. But "Rocky Top Tennessee" isn't either. Neither is "Sweet Home Alabama". I went to Kentucky for a game a few years ago and they sing "My Old Kentucky Home" prior to the game which makes "I Won't Back Down" seem like Thunderstruck by comparison. But the pride that those fan bases sing those songs with is second to none. The kind of pride that could never be showcased or duplicated singing a song for its "energy" only. And none of those three would change those songs out for anything else in the world for obvious reasons.

If you're suggesting we do something like the Wisconsin thing in addition to IWBD -- sure, why not? Think it would be a blast and there's plenty of opportunities throughout the game to add something like that in. But if you're suggesting replacing it -- then obviously I adamantly think any temporary high from an otherwise meaningless song is a tremendous price to pay to lose something as meaningful as what we're doing now. And I can assure you, there are plenty of fans from fsu, ga, etc that absolutely hate that we have something that cool to showcase -- clearly it chaps lsu as they keep trying to step on it.

Lastly -- you say you're willing to wager that there are probably upper echelon music acts from places like Seattle, Minnesota, etc that are intrinsically linked to a major University, and yet off the top of your head you're unable to cite one single example. That's exactly my point -- if there were another one, wouldn't we all know about it? At this point, because of this new tradition, if you ask any die-hard college football fan to name an iconic rock band associated with (and a major supporter of, which TP was) a University they will almost all reply with the Gators and Tom Petty. They all know that now. Ask any of them to name a second and I'd wager they'd come up just as blank as you and I are -- because I can't think of a single other either.

The video of Wisconsin is definitely cool -- I get what you're saying. That would be a ton of fun in person!

But don't discount how special and visceral this is in person too:

Personally, I think we should go with another Gainesville legacy and sing "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" or "For What It's Worth". Can't be any worse of a motivator than now.

Personally, I prefer this song instead to sing to...

    I am confused.

Did Tom Petty like the Tasmanian Devil? Okay, maybe this is what you meant.

I get the sentimental value of having a Petty song...really I do. Probably more so than most since I'm an actual ACR who went to UF. BUT...all I'm saying is it's not a tradition that gets people pumped. It's a great song from the most famous townie ever. That said, I don't know if you would feel the same way if our famous town musician was Barry Mannilow or Michael Bolton...THE Michael Bolton.

Off the top of my head, just listing a few that could conceivably be in the Petty tier...Bob Seger from Ann Arbor, aforementioned Dylan and Minnesota, Nirvana and the "seattle Sound" for U Dub....hell, not to give the mutts any good ideas, but James Brown, while born in nearby Augusta, was a huge Dawg fan and even had a song for Vince Dooley. A James Brown song at a stadium would be a damn dance party!

I get it, really, I do, and I'm not saying I disagree. I think we should honor him...I just don't know if singing "Wont Back Down" is the route I would take....but that's just me. Then again, Kentucky honored Guns N' Roses by making their lead singer the head coach so it could be worse.

Thunderstruck or "Immigrant Song" from Zeppelin...too bad they weren't born in Gainesville. UF should offer them honorary degrees.
