This crazy ruling states that only rights "deeply rooted" in the Constitution really exist. Those particular rights apply to white men only. Also, every justice that said Roe was settled law in their confirmation hearings should be impeached and removed.
Where are all the folks who said I was being dramatic that these judges would overturn Roe with zero reservation? Their whole purpose on the court is to legislate Republican policy goals.
The draft opinion is too large for me to link but the first full paragraph on P5 of it reads as an open invitation to states to ban things like contraception, gay marriage, interracial marriage, etc.
Don’t forget this little slip. And yes, I know he tried to walk it back, but be honest. This is what he meant. We are on the verge of Taliban status.
Just the first step in eliminating substantive due process rights applied to states. A whole bunch of rights are going to be restricted.
True the leak should not have happened. But we would know this by early July anyway. So, it isn’t about the leak.
As if country wasn't divided enough there will likely be specific areas that are "safe" and others where there will be a large number of men wondering why there aren't enough women to go around. And they'll get a brain drain of professionals especially women who would rather live in the US and not something resembling a Taliban stronghold. Good luck getting doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc to move to places that outright ban abortion, contraceptives, etc. Oh there will always be some, but like Russia, watch the brain drain of people choosing freedom.
You mentioned the leak was from Alito and another poster said the leak was from Breyer. That's 2 so far.
They already know the votes, which is why this is a “majority” opinion. Can this change? Sure. That’s what a “draft” means, the exact wording is certain to have already changed. But the positions of each justice are not as likely to change 180*. Maybe it’s Roberts floating this out there to try and influence someone else to flip and preserve precedent, “preserving the integrity of the court” and all that.
Whatever the case the fact that we are trying to be mind-readers and figure out the why's of the internal machinations of an unelected, anti-democratic institution is a sad state of affairs in a country that prides itself on being "free."
Now we get to learn from Democrats that extremism means letting the public vote on things not in the constitution. The horror!!!!
Oh word, is there going to be a national referendum on legalizing abortion in this country? Because otherwise, what the hell are you talking about?
