Donald Trump widens lead in 2024 Republican primary field after indictments, new poll says (msn.com)

A new poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal shows that, among Republican voters, 59% said Trump would be their first choice if the GOP primary was held today.

His criminal indictments also appear to have strengthened the former president’s commanding frontrunner status among Republican White House hopefuls.

But over 60% of poll respondents in the recent Wall Street Journal said they saw Trump’s indictments as political. Seventy-eight percent of respondents believed Trump’s conduct and attempts to overturn the 2020 election were legal, compared to just 16% who thought Trump’s actions were illegal.

The rest of the crowded Republican presidential field failed to hit double digits in the poll. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was behind DeSantis, being 8% of GOP primary voters’ first choice. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were at 5% and 3% support respectively.

Looks like Trump almost has this wrapped up, after the next debate we should see a few drop out.

Newt Gingrich on Trump's enduring appeal with Republican voters: He's 'not a candidate' but the 'leader of a mass movement' (msn.com)

    • Newt Gingrich told The Washington Post that Trump may be in the race, but he's not a "candidate."
    • "You can't think of him as a candidate. He is the leader of a mass movement," Gingrich said.
Candidates including Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, and Vivek Ramaswamy have spoken of the need for a new generation of conservative leadership. Gov. Ron DeSantis has long touted his governing record in Florida, arguing that he's best suited to produce conservative results. And Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina has sought to project a sort of sunny conservatism, a bit of a departure from what the party has seen in recent years.

As former House Speaker Newt Gingrich recently told The Washington Post, Trump is simply a figure that is unlike anyone else in the Republican Party. And Gingrich said the other candidates are not even on the same plateau.

"I keep trying to tell people, he is not a candidate. You can't think of him as a candidate. He is the leader of a mass movement," Gingrich told the newspaper. "They are competing with a leader in a completely different world."

Trump takes huge primary lead as 78pc of Republicans back Capitol riot in new poll (msn.com)

Some 78 per cent of voters said that Mr Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election were legitimate attempts to ensure an accurate vote.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the former president’s lead over Mr DeSantis has nearly doubled to 46 per cent.

However, this is a reflection of the hemorrhaging of support for the Florida governor which has slumped from 24 per cent in April to only 13 per cent, five points ahead of Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor.

So 78 percent of republicans believe the lies that trump and his minions told. At best that make them gullible but I think useful idiots is a better description.

I'd like to know what Trump's fans are getting in return for their admirable, but contemptible, loyalty. What did he do while president to inspire their dog-like devotion?

I guess some people find it difficult to grasp that there are so many. As Carlin said just think about how stupid the average person in thank then remember half of them are stupider than that.

Not that there was much doubt before, the title of this thread confirms that the Republican Party has devolved from a normal American political party into a cult of personality focused on the irrational worship of one person.

Ya got to be quick on feet to be humorous. I’m not absolutely certain of the exact words but one of his retorts to me was along the lines of “I know you are but what am I.”

    The gears turn slowly.

The Democrats have a problem on their hands. The indictments haven't dented his hold on the GOP base. They've actually made it stronger. The ones who don't vote for Trump in the primary are probably still going to vote for him in the general, because they've had to live through 4 years of Biden. There doesn't exist a viable third party candidate who can dent Trump's vote in the general, but there's one lurking that could seriously dent Biden's. 69% of Democrats believe Joe Biden is too old to run again, which means a likely shortfall of turnout on his end. And this all assumes we remain at sub-4 unemployment for another year, which all signs point to that we likely won't.

Trump is going to get about 20% of the independent vote or less. Anything else you are hanging your hats on is pure fantasy.
