While the leadership of the Republican Party and even at least part of the conservative media appears to be abandoning Trump it's not the first time that he was rejected by the party's leadership. When he was running for the nomination in 2016 the mainstream party leaders opposed his candidacy. After he won the nomination they rallied around him. After January 6, 2021 something similar happened although only for a few days, Kevin McCarthy being a prime example. A couple of days after criticizing Trump's role in the failed insurrection McCarthy flew down to Mar-a-Lago to kiss his ring. Even if that doesn't happen again Trump will blowup the party rather than accepting another politician as the party's nominee. As I said before it's very likely that if Trump doesn't get the nomination he will run as independent or third party candidate and in an Electoral College system with the winner taking all of a state's votes a third party candidate doesn't need very many votes to affect the outcome of the election, the best example being 2000 when Ralph Nader's two percent of the vote handed Florida and the presidency to George W. Bush and Trump running as a 3rd party candidate in 2024 would end up with well over 10 percent of the vote.

By the way I wouldn't rule out a run for the Republican nomination by Glenn Youngkin the governor of Virginia. Youngkin is DeSantis lite and he is probably a better campaigner than DeSantis although he currently doesn't have a national profile anywhere that of Ron DeSantis. He flew around the country campaigning on behalf of other Republicans and if Trump tries to destroy DeSantis Youngkin could very well step in to fill the void.

How about this as a Faustian bargain for Desantis…

Densantis promises Trump that he will pardon Trump from any and all crimes of which he is charged or convicted, and promise he will campaign that it’s all a witch hunt - if Trump does not run against Desantis and Trump endorses him in primary.

It's not crazy, but I don't think Trump will go for it. If Trump does in fact announce soon, it will be a tough decision for DeSantis. I think RD can beat Trump, but not without sustaining a lot of damage. I think if I were RD, I'd wait til 2028. Other than Pence, I can't think of anyone who'd do battle with Trump. Trump does make things interesting.

Imo DeSantis would be a formidable candidate for potus. He has no personal baggage that I’m aware, and a impressive personal and professional resume: modest-middle class upbringing (not a silver-spooner), Yale grad, served in military. Married once to sharp attractive wife, kids. And the strong concerns for his work as governor doesn’t get national exposure. He won fla 60-40. Fla isn’t that red. Don’t get me wrong - I’ll vote against him and that’s for another post. But the dems better hope repubs nom Dear Leader again. He is very beatable. But alas, imo repubs WILL nom their Dear Leader.

 

Agree with all that. Further, I suspect Ron's smart enough to shift his governing style & rhetoric at the federal level.

Trump cannot help himself. I think the Desantis we see now is an act. I think he'll adjust the act if he thinks it benefits him.

 

I don't think it's remotely an act. The guy was a hateful crackpot before he became governor of Florida. See his 2011 book. Some aspects of his shtick are an act (like copying Trump's mannerisms), but his governing philosophy in Florida (Viktor Orban knockoff) is very much not an act.

Desantis literally gets shaken when challenged by a no name reporter on Covid. How on earth do you think he is going to react when an absolute professional TROLL like Trump challenges him or mocks him? Regardless, that first debate will be appointment level TV. Let the bloodbath begin.
