Donald Trump officially wages war against Florida governor "Ron DeSanctimonious"

Yeah, I don't see them on the same ticket. DeSantis could wait him out since Trump would be a lame duck if he wins in 2024, but that carries its own risks. What I would be concerned about if I were the GOP would be a protracted primary where DeSantis wins and Trump claims fraud again - which he almost certainly would. I'm not saying most hard core Trump supporters would stay home in the general, but it wouldn't take that many to cause a problem in some close states.

 

Having to choose between DeSantis and Trump:

 

If you're the GOP today, Trump has to go. These mid-terms were an epic fail for Trump and the GOP shouldn't risk what should be a lay down victory against an aging Biden in 2024. This was really a referendum on the 2020 election and Trump got beat...again. The question remains: how will the GOP rid themselves of Trump considering the polls clearly show him as the front-runner? Biden admin needs to play it cautiously, because an indictment of Trump could actually help the GOP with this problem. If I'm Biden, I want Trump as the nominee, because he's a basket case and it will only worsen. Big time let down from Trump and he now has 2020 and 2022 to answer for.

 

I'm not sure if an indictment would help Trump or hurt Trump, but I think Biden should stay as far away from any prosecutorial decision as possible - both ways. I'm not even sure they should be providing him with updates. It should really be by the book based upon the evidence and the law and without concern about whom it may help or hurt. But maybe I'm being naive.

 

Yeah by not shuttering business deemed “essential” and locking people in their homes he’s a sociopath.

 

Just proof most Pubs aren’t all in Trumpers anymore

 

By using the power of government to attack the LGBTQ community, including children, and relentlessly targeting our First Amendment and democratic rights. He's a sociopath. He's certainly smarter than Trump, but he's just as deranged. Wants to be our version of Viktor Orban.

no but relieving DA's who disagree with him, firing school boards he doesn't like, district mapping, reedy creek, political police force, refugee flights....those all qualify as petty and vindictive with no respect for the law/rules that should govern his behavior and decisions at a minimum

 

so maybe Biden's speech appealed to enough of them to make a difference? MAGA ain't the cool kids anymore...

 

More likely the “trump denier candidates” didn’t appeal to as many Pubs as some would have suggested.

On Thursday, the right-leaning News Corp-owned paper published a stunning cover that featured a caricature of the one-term president precariously placed atop a wall with a headline that read, “TRUMPTY DUMPTY”, an allusion to the nursery rhyme character, Humpty Dumpty, who, as the poem goes, “had a great fall”.

“Don (who couldn’t build a great wall) had a great fall - can all the GOP’s men put the party back together again?” the front page headline continued, giving more than a heavy-handed hint that the newspaper does not endorse Mr Trump for another term, like they did in 2020.

The New York Post’s damning rebuke of the 45th president was just one of many news outlets and conservative pundits who seemed to put the blame of the Republican party’s poor showing on Tuesday at his feet, as Fox News – another Murdoch-owned news outlet – similarly began pulling the camera away from Mr Trump and towards other GOP hopefuls.

It's the nature of politics. The bottom line is always electability, and Trump is now having a negative impact on it. The GOP was pleased to accommodate Trump's venality and immorality as long as he had long, durable coattails to which they could cling. Now those coattails are in tatters, his legal problems are seemingly endless, and the balance sheet amply displays that he's a liability.
