You wouldn't know if you're getting more threats than you used to unless you'd been keeping score?

It's hard to imagine you guys are serious about this. I'm pretty certain I've read a lot more concern about drag shows and grooming that I used to ... but who knows? I haven't been recording every one.

Meteorologists do a good job and I think are pretty widely respected, particularly in markets with a lot of severe weather. People get mad about their shows getting interrupted, but the false alarm rates for tornadoes is much lower than it used to be. But I have no doubt they are getting more nasty and threatening messages, particularly if they’ve expressed opinions about climate change.

One would think getting a threat would lead to a higher level of investigation (by Leo’s) that tallying drama shows (unless one is into that sort of thing)

There are about 2.6 million people in the Orlando MSA.
If .1 percent of them are wack jobs that believe this junk, that’s 2600 people.
30 years ago those 2600 didn’t have a public forum for their crazy, they do now. More importantly, they have access to Tiger wack jobs who reinforce their beliefs collectively. We see it in all kinds of things now.

IOW one "positive" thing about the "social media" (which is actually the "anti-social media") is that it's helping expose humanity for what it is. As if two world wars and countless other wars and atrocities down through the ages haven't already done it.

Attacking meteorologists has been a fringe conspiracy nut go-to for decades. They are just another part of The Apparatus that micromanages every dimwit’s life down to the mundane like watching you via a camera in your TV. These
people are obviously Very Important, needing to be monitored and compelled into evil deeds. “Chemtrails” and this mysterious ability to control hurricanes is nothing new.

But now this thought is pretty much mainlined into the RW with almost all recent political and media gains being these very nuts. They run exclusively on distrust at every level, except of course for them specifically. No politician is to be trusted (vote for me!) All elections are fraudulent (but I DID win!) All media is lying (click here, watch our live-stream, demand this channel from your cable provider!) All experts are just controlling you (to combat this, follow these instructions with NO deviation…) Doctors are killing you (Buy this concoction I imagined up just this week, it cures “Illness”!)

BTW, as someone who monitors weather daily because I have a need for clear, low-wind, moderate temp days, weather prediction is almost absurdly accurate. 10 days out, sure, things may change dramatically. But about 48 hours and in, you can literally know the weather by the hour and it’s essentially spot on.

When someone says “it was supposed to rain but didn’t”, that is likely just a fundamental misunderstanding of statistics and probabilities. If NOAA says it’s 100% chance of rain, that is basically a lock. But if it’s 40%, maybe’s that seems like a lot, but it isn’t. 60% of no rain. Even at 70%, you have a solid 3 in 10 chance of getting lucky.

This weather criticism seems particularly focused. The same people who criticize them don’t seem to struggle with percentages in other contexts. If you tell someone they have a 30% chance of finding a $100 on the ground today they likely won’t be flabbergasted when they do not find one. But 30% rain and it didn’t: STUPID WEATHER GUY.

You should check the weather forecasts for Saudi Arabia. It rarely exceeds 4% chance of rain. And that was in "rainy season". I did see a few minutes of rain while I was over there for several weeks, however.

But people like MTG are them. One of 535 who actually do have some juice over your life. And they believe the levers of power are indeed about control, and they act accordingly.

Thanks - this thread got me wondering why some conservatives seem hell bent on criticizing weather experts. I think you covered it pretty well here.

I worked for a company that made the microprocessors for Cray super computers in the mid 1990's. The company was named Digital and we designed and fabricated the Alpha microprocesser. The first RISC processor with multiple cores and would process circles around the most power Pentiums at that time. Cray built customer systems that put 100+ of those in parallel for NOAA. They gave us a very superficial presentation on all of the variables that are processed as part of weather modelling. It was jaw dropping.

All of this cr@p comes from the depths of ignorance of far too many people, and the ease with which their ignorance is manipulated by the likes of Ruppert Murdoch for his benefit. If people stopped to ask about what goes into weather modelling, forecasting and reasons for the large error bars, much of the power of the manipulators would go away.

Sad that so many millions upon millions world wide are so willfully ignorant.

After a week of rain that ruined memorial day I am one click away from threatening meteorologists. Give me one more rain day Kaitlyn!!!! She is the secret chemtrail enabler on the right.

Most people can’t change they oil anymore. Are you surprised they don’t understand what goes into a weather forecast?

These whack jobs want these people to lie about the weather though intimidation and other tactics. It's the same old Saul Alinsky crap/tactics.

You make a really good point. However, I would expect (maybe hope is closer to the correct term) that people would educate themselves even a little bit before making irrational, anger filled threats toward total strangers.
