I've been there and no, you wouldn't want to live there. If you live in Pittsburgh, WV is good place to go camping or skiing, that's it.

yet their recent political bent of anti-abortion , moms for book burning is going to reduce the impact of that benefit for companies in pursuit of something other than cheap labor and cheap cost of living. Having tubby tommy holding up every military promotion over military paying for abortion travel doesn't do anything to advance their forward thinking nor does their abortion s stance in the state

Seems you are glossing over the point that Iger was weighing this issue over 6 months ago because the stock price has fallen 50% since this project was announced and their subscribers have fallen as well along with laying off 11k employees. Couple that with the disaster that was the Star Wars Interactive Hotel to the tune of $2 Billion and that could be the real reason Disney cancelled their plans. But it doesn't make for good political fodder, does it?

Your last paragraph is dead-on correct. This won’t hurt Disney, and the State and community will likely never know what it lost, since it never had the actual investment. But this is absolutely a message of more to come. And it’s a loud message to every politician not named DeSantis, who will come and go. The other representatives are going to have to ultimately answer to their constituents as to why they chose to support a War of Hate at the expense of their pocketbooks and infrastructure.

West Virginia is beautiful and is an underrated tourist spot for skiing and winter activities, but I definitely wouldn’t want to live there year round. And again, this is coming from someone who was born there and lived a good amount of their life in the state.

But you’re glossing over the point that Disney’s Campus was both a cost-cutting and logistically engineered decision which is unrelated to the hotel division. And even if you’re right, it’s still a loud and clear message of more BILLIONS to be reallocated to different projects in different states by Disney.

Ask yourself, how would this move impact your grade if you were in charge of economic development for Central Florida. Ask yourself if you would be happy to report to your Boss that $17 BILLION of expected investment over the next decade (that’s 1.7 BILLION annually), before calculating the economic impact of that investment once complete, is now at total risk. And then ask yourself how silly you’d feel when reporting that the reason it is at near total is risk, is because the investor thinks all people should be treated equally and with dignity, which made the State very angry.

I know one engineering firm that is scrambling to fill the void right now. fortunately for them, the project will just become an annuity that keeps paying until someone else picks it up for development and they have the inside lane to that work now that they have a history on it. It may still happen once DeS is termed out

Most of the liberals who “hate corporations” do so for a specific reason. That they are heavy environmental polluters or tax evaders (or sometimes both). Liberals commonly target fossil fuel industry for these reasons. When corporations cause economic malaise, such as 2008-2009 financial crises, you saw more anti-bank populism from both the left wing and right wing. There has also been historical liberal animus against “global” corporations that do a lot of offshoring of jobs to Asia. This was a pro-union position to “protect” factory jobs. Oddly, only after those jobs are long gone (and it’s too late to roll back) now you see so called Conservatives flip flop, adopting the “globalist” lexicon to disparage free trade and global corporations.

I don’t know of any special liberal animus against “corporations” more generally in the leisure and hospitality space. This is just social warrior nonsense on the level of the Chic-fil-a boycott, which also was incredibly stupid and pointless.

they have plans for that investment, provided that it isn't in a punitive environment, they aren't going anywhere, whether they continue to grow remains to be seen. if nothing else, they have proven that plans can change.

Cost of living and housing costs. Of course, as more people move to the lower COL states, COL will rise there. But the fact of the matter is where you can find high-paying, good jobs still matters. I'd much rather be in a state offering those jobs and attracting educated people than whatever silliness you're spewing about "likeness." Notably, you didn't name Mississippi or West Virginia, the states you previously referenced, as the places people are moving.

Yet again, I'm failing to see how this has anything to do with West Virginia or Mississippi supposedly being better places than California and New York. And this is coming from somebody who has zero interest in living in a city like LA or NYC. But I also have zero interest in living in Mississippi or West Virginia.

loved Pittsburgh, built Nevillewood Golf Course there when I worked for Jack Nicklaus in early 90's. West Virginia had some pretty scenery but wouldn't want to live there. we bought a bunch of trees from a nursery in WV where trees were grown on a steep hillside so you wouldn't have to create tree wells when planting them on steep slopes.

Here are the 2 internal memos and why they decided to scrap the plans and announced new plans to invest 17 Billion and create over 13K jobs over the next ten years this project was also suffering through a lot of construction issues and had already been pushed back several times the last one to 2026

Let's assume you're right. How do you not understand that the "message" DeSantis is trying to send is both harmful to the people of this state and antithetical to the First Amendment? "If you speak out against me, my government will retaliate against you." That is the sort of message they send in third-world autocracies, not in the United States of America.

How on earth can you claim to support the Constitution while defending that message? And don't offer excuses (the libs pushed me to this!) or whataboutism.

Well I never said I agree with DeSantis position here.

It’s funny how some are so pro business now and pro tax breaks for Billion dollar companies.

If DeSantis had negotiated with some billionaire to move a company here via tax breaks you would hear the usual suspects screaming about how it’s a bailout for the rich.

Sounds like to your friend, it may be “spectacular” in the sense that if you made your money somewhere else, you can buy some of the best property in WV and live like a king. Originally, that was the impetus for retirees moving to FL and AZ. Of course the weather is a bit better in the sun belt states. I doubt retirement flows could support WV’s economic growth in the same way.

DeSantis-hating neo-liberal wokesters will never acknowledge this Disney decision was a near-term cost savings measure. To admit such is simply not in their DNA.

Wonder if ol’ Gov Gav Newsome decided to throw Disney a bone to keep the jobs in Cali ……. and was this something Disney’s hoped would happen?

Seeing right wingers disparage the largest cities is almost like a Yogi Berra-ism.

“Nobody wants to live there, it’s too expensive and too crowded”.
