How is it costing the state a lot of Sunni or Shia clerics? Not sure what you were going for here.

Indeed. The Florida economy missed out on a permanent, 1 billion dollar complex because of their choice in governor. Huzzah!

It’s more the absurdity of Desantis position, and “celebrating” the lack of 2000 jobs. That it’s Disney is more or less irrelevant when you realize it could have been any entity (and indeed, we’ve already seen similar absurdity around Target, currently seeing with Bud Light, etc). It’s an endless list.

Lake Nona is a booming and high priced area, with a relatively new UF medical research campus BTW (I assume built to be convenient to new UCF’s med school, a ton of medical and biotech stuff popping in this area in the 2010’s). Im sure they’ll be fine either way, just as it surely doesn’t matter all that much to Disney’s bottom line. The scale of the impact doesn’t make the position less absurd.

UF’s Lake Nona research campus. Caution: employees and students may be woke.

I have refrained from posting on this subject but if I read the tea leaves correctly Gov DeSantis has appeared to make a significant tactical political misake with his social crusade moves against LGBTQ, Education, Books and so forth.

It seems Trump is killing him in GOP Presidential frontrunner status so whatever moves he is making clearly is not helping his presidential aspirations.

    The war with Disney? "WOW".

For anyone that remotely questions what the Florida GOP currently "is" when was the last time a strong Florida GOP Gov. decided to piss off, alienate and legislate against one of the biggest business entities in the State? Perhaps the biggest?

Not that I am a big fan of Disney. Having dealt with that company on a professional level I can affirm that company holds vendors and contractors in low if not disrespectful regards.

On a social level forget about Mickey Mouse and Fireworks. The executive leadership is as far away from the happy "cartoon" charachters they like to drap around themselves and are far more similar to Bernie Madoff with their insatiable thirst for profits at any costs. Two examples: ESPN and the HISTORY channel.

May the Florida GOP and the Lords of Disney consume themselves in a hellish Gottadumerung!

The jobs had an average salary of $120,000 which is no big deal to some of you

I’m confident Florida will survive not getting another 2,000+ folks who would more likely than not drag with them some of their hare-brained liberal dogma.

But again, who really cares about this Disney decision?

Sure, if Disney's stock wasn't in the tank and they weren't losing subscribers left and right maybe they would've moved. The stock is down 50% since they announced this move. Obvious to anyone with a brain why they cancelled and had zero to do with DeSantis but it does give Iger some political cover by blaming DeSantis. I am not in favor of DeSantis going after Disney in the first place but this is all about economics.

I’m sure Cali lawmakers will appreciate retaining that source if taxable income to assist in addressing the state’s rather substantial state budgetary issues.

This move is absolutely about Desantis. Disney had stated that they were postponing the move until 2026. It is not as if they were actively in the process of construction so money was not being lost. There was no financial reason to make this announcement

You are lying. "Absolutely"? Too funny. I am showing data that DIS stock price has cratered since they announced this and have laid off 11k employees and even in Nov Iger hinted this might not be the best move fiscally. Keep trying Sport!

It’s probably a political stunt that even Desantis doesn’t believe, but sees as necessary theater for the rubes. To normal people, it seems tilting at windmills with this “anti-woke” stuff.

2000 jobs doesn’t make much dent, which is repeating what I just said. But let’s say the state does this a few more times, then some other companies pull out or decide it’s just not worth investing in FL. You already had Peter Thiel questioning the wisdom of business investment in FL. It’s death by 1000 cuts that you might not see the ramifications of for a few years once the flow of retiring boomers stops pumping up FL’s “growth” numbers. Boomers retiring pretty much just create demand for lawn care jobs and health services. The danger is once that trend plays out you are left with a WV-like economy. The one advantage that shouldn’t go away for FL as a state is that it can milk tourists, nobody “visits” WV. But nobody visits rural parts of FL either.

I believe DeSantis went the “I’m going to war with woke” route because he’s trying to look tough. Unfortunately for him when you’re getting your butt kicked by a psychopathic Trump, drag queens, librarians, and a cartoonist mouse, it’s apparent he’s gone to war with the wrong people. Being short, chubby, and having an effeminate voice doesn’t help him either in the tough guy area.

I did not say Chicago and Detroit are states. I said states could take on their likeness. Also, GDP is not everything, and neither is GDP per capita. There is a reason people are leaving New York and California to move to places like Florida, Texas, and Utah. When people figured out that they can work remote, people started ditching New York and California. Now, New York City is in big financial trouble because they have hemorrhaged so many residents with the rise of remote work. The amount of revenue lost from the exodus has put New York City in a lot of financial trouble.

The truth is the US probably has the highest GDP per capita in world history. The average person in America lives a quality of life on par with what kings were accustomed to in past generations. You might argue the top 1% skews that, but if you make $34,000+ then you are in the top 1% of richest people in the world. The median household income in the US is $71,000. So, most Americans are in that top 1% of the richest people in the world. Yet, we might be one of the most depressed, unhappy, anxious, and mentally ill nations in the history of the world. There are nations far poorer than we are, and they are happier than we are. There are many people here who are quite wealthy, and they are also quite unhappy with their lives. That tells me the set of priorities they have chosen to pursue in life are quite flawed.

The fact that the OG “too politically correct” guy (Trump), is taking the other side of Desantis - essentially the anti-anti-woke antagonist to Desantis’ anti-Disney crusader should clue some in to how fake all this is to the politicians. It’s only not fake to the bigots. To the donor and political class, it’s all a show.

It was predictable split once “anti-woke” started attacking LGBTQ people and not just blacks. They forgot a gay guy was one of Trumps biggest early patrons. For all Trumps fascist race baiting and anti-immigrant horseshit, I don’t think he ever attacked gay rights. Although he undoubtedly “faked” his position on abortion to win over social conservatives. So it’s not like he was above pandering.
