I had a young woman who was running for the school board promise to help me, and then she ghosted me after she was elected.

I was mostly given the "No government telling parents what to do" somehow they missed the entire part about it being voluntary. Remember Lauren Ritchie? She told me that in an email. I gave up not long after my last one graduated.

In all seriousness though, the good thing is they have a great case to have this easily reversed in the courts so they can keep their freedoms as a private company, much like private schools. Sounds like a good idea in the Free State of Florida.

We will see. The more it stays in the news though…the better for DeSantis.

This is what I've read quite a bit about and heard from some I know at Disney. They will most likely sue and appeal this until Desantis is gone. This will buy them the time for either a less hostile governor who values private freedoms or they will win the suit with him in office anyway.

Disney built Florida and sustains it, Desantis is a blip that can be overturned piece by piece by a moderate.

How likely is it that a moderate will get elected in FL?

That's understandable. It's why I said can instead of will.

At the same time, will the next governor be a vindictive power-hungry culture warrior who gets his feelings easily hurt?

fyi, the pub lackeys he put in charge were all voted out in the last election. the whole fiasco was to fire the superintendent and they didn't even get that right when they failed to properly notice the meeting.

Because they are NOT a private cooperation making money on movies, sports and other considerations, they are just a community.

Only if the are a private corporation making profits on movies and sports. These special districts are no different than any other community of peoples... developments. IOW, they are not a private corporation making a product that also owns and manages a municipality.

I think privately owned prisons should be abolished.

Private developers are just builders, they do NOT control their people and their municipalities.

Yes, that's how it all started. But now the State Legislature and the Governor have charged course on allowing Disney to run a community/municipality.

A question that I should have posed earlier, not directed to you necessarily - Would you like Samsung to start a city in Florida, and have their executives run it? I think that should be the reason why Disney should not be allowed run it's own private municipality with their executives hand picking everyone to run it.

You know absolutely nothing about The Villages, apparently.

What I find interesting is that this was never an issue. It has never been part of the conversation or any governor's debate. That is until Disney took a stand for their employees with his authoritarian "stop woke" law. Don't tell businesses how to train their employees so they can create a welcoming work environment. Freedom.

Different Legislature, different Governor and a very different time we live in.

But if you want to look at it more broadly... what if China bought a huge piece of land in Florida and they wanted to build a private business on that land... with their own power plant their own neighborhoods... their own hired police department... fire department. And they ran it like their very own city with their own people running all aspects of that said city? Would you be okay with that?

One of the private developers I work with is currently building a small municipality, including water, sewer, roads, utility plants, parks, schools, etc. Everything except a power plant. The county will not build this and will only approve zoning for residential if all of the ancillary needs are addressed within the developemnt footprint. They are investing hundreds of millions to build all of this stuff with a 20 - 30 year buildout. They will not, and nobody else would, build all of that and hand it over to the county to maintain when their long-term profitability requires a level of service above the average muni to retain the value being created. This is common across the state of Florida. Babcock Ranch even built their own power plants (solar) in conjunction with FPL. The Villages is just the largest one but there are special districts owning and maintaining infrastructure across the state.

Several of those communities in SW FL very familiar to me. I did not realize they were so designated.

But, no one in the GOP made any effort to revoke RCID until after Chapek spoke out about the PRIE bill. And the state senator from Brevard came out on video and admitted this action was in response to Chapek's statements.

As to any corporation now needing a special district, this would never be considered as the state has a much better infrastructure than 60 years ago and would not be justified. I get your point, but revoking RCID was all about suppressing a corporation's speech and not for another reason.

doing one right now that abuts the panther preserve. 3 major critter crossings and lots of fencing but they can flank us and come in anyway if they are really determined. Sometimes I just don't understand USFWS at all. Ian brought us two new eagle nests and several CarCara nests.
