If I walked in on a family member viewing this, I would look to stage an intervention, its worse than finding them doing hardcore drugs
I don’t disagree. My point was that every book banned falls on the shoulders of school districts. I’m aggravated that there even is a federal DOE and I’m ambivalent about state DOEs. I see the DOEs as largely responsible for the need for local school districts to feel the need to rely on outside money to fund mandated programs. I wish we could get back to basics but I understand that we have so dumbed down our electorate that we get what we deserve in elected officials and their appointed cronies. I recognize that’s a kinda ironic statement in a school board comment…
That's an awfully myopic view. School districts weren't doing this before the state legislature, governor, and FL DOE intervened.
Just so. As almost always, the important question isn’t the specific, in this case, which books should we ban? But it is instead the general, who decides? Given our nation’s historical reverence for individual liberty, one would assume our default answer would be that each can decide for themselves.
If the fed is going to mandate certain programs (eg. Title I), why should it not fund them? Do you think your taxes would decrease if the federal DOE were to be dissolved?
Don’t disagree this time, either, with your second assertion. Debating on the use of myopic since some define it as rather disparaging. In any case, I still have a high level of heartburn with a federal DOE and a lesser level with a state DOE. They seem to focus on the wrong things and have led us far off course from providing meaningful education to our kids. Gotta admit it’s not just them, though; our parenting skills are crap these days and that’s a huge reason for our cultural and electoral failures. edit: I’m holding my final opinion on the winner of this debate pending receipt of some tweets from influencers…
It was intended as a side by side compare/contrast between two of the 3 most populous states in the union who are almost diametrically opposed politically, especially in the wake of covid, through their respective governors, who both very much represent the politics that characterize their respective states. The main difference though was that instead of hearing a defense for Cali's politicies, we got defense of Biden's presidency. GN didn't really defend his own policies as much as he defended Biden's presidency (and of course, attacked Desantis). As I posted earlier, Hannity had previously challenged GN over his policies, and I thought he did fairly well; thought I'd see more of that--instead he mostly resorted to lying, diversoin, avoidance, and again, attacking. Desantis defended some of his policies, and attacked GN as well. Desantis interrupted GN far more than the reverse, which was not a good look for RD, but was within the realm of the new norm for debates these dasys, given the way they've all played out over the last several years (that's where I say Hannity dropped the ball; he was the moderator, has a personal relationship with both, and should have done a lot more to reign it in, than he did). But there was still a lot of solid exchanges between the 2. On the whole, I thought it was alright.
Ok. So if the local (rather than state or federal) school board "banned" (to use your word, inapposite as it is) the porn/sex/gender indoctrination missives, then you would accept that decision. Of course, there are innumerable other books that were already "banned" from child education syllabi - graphic horror, salacious and gratuitous sex and drug use, racist diatribes, etc. What intrinsic qualities depicted in the porn/sex/gender genre are more necessary than those to educate the young? At the bottom level, the people who made this an issue possess a distorted and perverted need/pleasure in sexualizing children. It's creepy just like the man exposing himself in public to children.
Fair point 'rade, but this is a push back agains agenda driven indoctrination from the Left. That's why RD has taken that step. Perhaps he's overstepped his bounds....but 'the bounds' were overstepped in the opposite direction, first. Also worth noting--where's y'all's concern been for the First Amendment, when the Federal government--the one actually bound by the First Amendment--has been actively working with 'big tech' and the social media mega platforms, to manipulate the political narrative and shut political discourse down? That is one hell of a greater concern, than regining it what is taught in public schools--which the goverment, who pays for and provides same, is responsible for. Note: those books aren't banned--they are merely excluded from or public shcools, and school curricula; parents are free to go to their local book stores, order these 'banned books' on line on Amazon, etc, at will.
Then take away your absolutely ridiculous comment about fentanyl and illegal. Make stupid comments, get stupid replies.
Fun Heat game, Panthers game and NFL game last night. Didn’t even realize the debate was on last night.
I was attacking his stupid logic which was posted on another thread & which was inconsistent with what he posted on this thread a mere 30 mins later. Take away....LOL. you got the bolded part 1/2 right.
I watched. There were 8 women upstairs getting hammered & playing Mahjong. I had fun. I practiced playing fly me to the moon while watching. I thought the split screen to watch RD while he was not speaking was the best. How was this an ideological debate? I heard virtually no policies mentioned & even when they were I heard 0 ideological foundations. It seems to me people on this thread & in the world at large, just think if pubs do it, it's conservative; if libs do it, it's liberal. Like shutdowns. shutdowns = liberal; not shutdowns = conservative. No thinking required. The notion that Desantis is running Fla by con ideology is absurd.
If it's a purely local decision, I accept it, assuming they are complying with the Florida and U.S. Constitutions. But these aren't purely local decisions, and award-winning novels aren't "porn/sex/gender indoctrination missives," except to maybe the most ignorant in our society. And we're not talking about "syllabi." We're talking about libraries: choice. We agree that Klanned Karenhood, DeSantis, and the freedom haters who made this an issue certainly are screwed up in the head.
These "debates" need to have the moderator kill the mike of the person who is not supposed to be speaking. These come across as an episode of "Jerry Springer."
I didn't watch last night luckily it seems. But I did see that DeSantis definitely got in the best zinger of the night. DeSantis said a man told him he moved from California to Florida because the state was much better governed. That man was Gavin Newsom's father in law. Ouch. If anyone has a better one than that post it.
"Libraries"? All "libraries"? There are a number of different types of libraries. Public libraries open to anyone (no books "banned"). Online libraries open to anyone (no books "banned"). High School libraries (no books "banned", but clearly limited selection and focused on books intended for education purposes matching curriculum). Elementary school libraries (yep, keep the smut away from children - that is, unless you think young adults or adults should be hanging out in elementary school libraries). A little discernment and focus are appreciated. If people who wish to protect children from age-inappropriate materials are "freedom haters" and klansmen, then you pretty much have iterated Hilary's "basket of deplorables" mentality. It's further telling that accusing people who maintain basic morality are "screwed up in the head" and not those who promote teaching young-uns about oral sex probably long before those children even have a clue or urge about such things.
