I recall back in 2009 conservatives complained about the government's role in GM's structured bankruptcy and how it wiped out the value of assets of GM's bondholders, adding that they would have suffered the loss of the value of their bonds regardless of what the Federal government did. For some reason the same conservatives have no problem with the impact that Ron DeSantis's war on Disney could have on Reedy Creek bondholders. By the way as I mentioned in a previous post, after having milked the stunt for all he can politically DeSantis and Republicans will probably rescind the legislation dissolving the Reedy Creek special district before it's ever implemented.
Okay, first of all, Disney doesn't have any special copyright protections, the copyright extensions they got congress to pass apply to everyone. Second, doesn't the constitution ban retroactive laws? https://thehill.com/news/senate/348...ure-to-strip-disney-of-copyright-protections/ Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) introduced legislation on Tuesday that would strip “woke corporations like Disney” of special protections enabling companies to hold copyright material for decades. The Copyright Clause Restoration Act would limit copyrighted material to 56 years and apply the new rule retroactively, meaning Disney and other companies could immediately lose some copyright protections if the law were passed. The measure is the latest Republican attack on Disney, which last month was stripped of its self-governing status at its amusement park in Orlando, Fla., after Gov. Ron DeSantis took issue with the media company for speaking out against the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prohibits the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade. Hawley’s bill goes after Disney’s long-running list of iconic characters stretching from Mickey Mouse to Marvel superheroes.
Didn't any of these people go to school? In what world would this be okay and allowed? Nevermind forgot who I'm talking about. Carry on.
If you weren't aware, Ronnie the Clown and many other Florida MAGA politicians aren't returning their campaign contributions from Disney. All about the mouth, not their money.
That is a downgrade because it defines the bonds as uncertain. DeSantis announced that there will be further legislation and there are likely court challenges.
The taxpayers may not have standing to bring a claim founded in Disney’s First Amendment rights. They may have a claim that assessed additional tax burdens. But their claim is distinct from Disney’s.
Ex post facto is a criminal proscription. Amending and shortening copyright laws implicate a whole host of other issues as to existing copyright rights. Including the takings clause. Hawley’s Bill is chum for the dumb anyway. It will go nowhere.
Yeah, I don't understand the legal aspects, but did wonder about that. I just know that the idiot governor is going to screw over the very tax payers cheering for years to come with endless waves of litigation.
Hawley is highly educated (BA from Stanford and JD from Yale). Laws like this are his sign of contempt for his own voters. He bets that they don't know or care about rights. And he might be right.
And it's all done as punishment for having opinions that differ from his.....ANOTHER fascist act....using governmental power to punish those whose opinions differ from those in power.
Yep. Don’t know how it compared pre pandemic. Still glad to see they are relatively OK. They are not hurting too much right now. I know 2 ways. You can always tell how much they need numbers by the Florida resident discounts. They use those to bring up numbers when things are short. Nothing good happening now. Second, and less probative, have been trying without success to reserve at some select resort restaurants. Nothing for 60 days. Unscientific, but I think they are OK. The pandemic hit to parks was very big because they were also absorbing acquisitions and building up streaming, a big loss leader on the front end. Parks were a stable cash cow till Covid
The Gov to the corporations - Be more proudly racist and homophobic; don’t just have your PR department put out nice progressive slogans publicly while still supporting the contrary behind the scenes and in your personal life
