    This is beautiful.

Also, Lincoln seems to have actually understood a part of Ronald Coase’s theory of externalities before Coase was even born.

Thanks. Going to read now. On the thread generally, new Miami Herald piece. I know the legislation was rushed, but could they have really missed something this basic?

Ive been through this routine before.

Cite examples of Democrats doing something extremely similar.

“These are not the same, this case involves *states every minute aspect, regardless of relevance, about the case to the point where you really can’t compare it with anything at all.*”

This will apply to every example, I’m sure…

Also, are you suggesting that if DeSantis had a broader range of targets, you would have no problem, even if his reasoning for doing it were the same?

Thanks. That was interesting. I was thinking while reading that it was Law and Economics even before I got to the cites. Richard Posner and Frank Easterbrook of the 7th Circuit wrote a lot of those opinions. I think it is a useful thought construct, but it does have limits, but beyond the scope. But good read. Thanks

Apparently the Legislature was aware of the cause but felt they could just negate it through subsequent legislation. This could have federal Constitutional dimensions in the impairment of contracts, though perhaps of the bond holders are not damaged…. We’ll see

This was wrong. But this is about Disney. Given your post here, you must then agree that what happened to Disney was wrong too. Btw: the IRS is not Democrats.

The IRS acted as an arm of the Obama Administration while he was in office, and the Commissioner answers to the President of the United States.

My point is, in a vacuum, it’s all wrong, but it’s this sort of stuff for years that has caused the left to have so much institutional power. Almost everyone who matters either agrees with them on the essential points, or is too fearful to speak up.

I believe you duchen, you’re pretty consistent on calling out global and historical authoritarianism. I wish the rest of the Democratic Party was like that.

But now, you essentially have one side abusing power, taking control over institutions by strong-arming them and intimidating them, then hiding behind the First Amendment when the other side does the same.

That is not a recipe for a free society, nor is it a recipe for a Democratic one. If it takes this sort of political war to get both parties to back off, that would actually be an ideal outcome, things would just get ugly before they get better.

The biggest question from a “right and wrong” standpoint really is whether these examples are historically influential and prevalent enough from Democrats to justify this move by DeSantis on the grounds of mutually assured destruction. You say it’s not, I say it might be. And that is really the only way of justifying this move. If Democrats didn’t exist and history began in 2022, this would be a terrible move.

It is a good example if government power being wielded against those exercising free speech rights. Motivated by their belief and speech. But the IRS is career public servants; it is not “Democrats,” as suggested by the poster. The entire point is that it what DeSantis did is equally wrong.

DeSantis can shout all he wants about forcing Disney to pay his debts, but the law required the county to assume those debts of the special district was canceled. Can’t repeal the law and say, “pay them anyway.” I saw DeSantis is raising a lot of money over this. That is the way it usually goes. People invite tyrants to take over with popular ideas. The tyranny of the majority. It eventually comes home to roost; only too late.

Disproportionate would be 248 to 3. 248 to 146 might just be the total available to scrutinize at the time. This was and has always been much ado about nothing.

    Huh?

I never said Disney violated a law. Some of you dream up stuff just to do it I think. I have said repeatedly they have and had every right to misrepresent and push a false narrative. With that the State of Florida has every right to address the special privileges it provides.

And with that my guess is that this gets handled behind closed doors. Just my opinion on the matter.

I really think if I said do not jump...quite a few would jump. The propaganda and covid (yes covid) has really messed some people up.

You really do not understand the consequences that can come from free speech. Disney can say what they want. They may not get the special treatment because of it. But spare us the idea Disney who is out filming in the Xinjiang Provence while using labor in China for profit is set to be sent off to the Soviet Gulags because they pushed a false narrative and lost special privileges.
