Can you explain how it is that Disney doesn't pay its taxes?

Because DeSantis is a terrible evil man, and the narrative is more important than the policy.

It is refreshing to see that leftists are capable of learning that the wealthy pay the majority of America's taxes. We should remember that when they start gaslighting us again come election season.

DeSantis just beat Disney to a pulp. Have any of you noticed that Disney hasn't said chit since the bill passed. LMAO!!!

 

No. They are not large enough and the municipality and utilities agreed to provide them service. Disney had to build a city out of nothing.

There are CDD's across the state that have the authority to levy and collect taxes to fund infrastructure though. Not aware of others that provide fire, police, electric, water, sewer etc. Maybe maintain roads, stormwater, landscape etc. Like a HOA but with taxing authority.

Yeah, as I mentioned upthread, Disney may have been one of the first development districts, but these days pretty much the only way any major developments happen in unincorporated land is via these types of districts.

County governments just aren't equipped to plan, finance, construct, manage, or maintain significant new infrastructure. So if any big projects are going to happen anywhere that's not already built out, it pretty much has to be through a development district.

This map is 8 years old, but it shows how many districts there are in just south Hillsborough county.



These things aren't special. They're not unique. They're not tax breaks. In fact they cost property owners a crap ton, because they have to pay for all of the development themselves rather than relying on county tax dollars. But they're necessary, because without the district structure, nothing gets built. Disney is still farm land and all those colored squares are vacant cow pastures like they were 30 years ago.

It's definitely right leaning. But it is one of the few right leaning sites that my left leaning friends find credible.

 

The deal with Disney was made more than 50 years ago. Disney has spent a great deal of money— probably billions relying on that deal. Came to Florida at great risk and turned raw land into an immense development that had greatly benefited Florida. It is the main economic engine of Central Florida. One of the drivers if their coming here and dong this was self governance. That deal— codified in law— enables Disney to develop its properties and to relieve local governments of the burden. One of the issues in land use is local impact; and this is how Disney and the State solved this problem. Disney, a private entity, had a property right to self-govern its District. Wise or not 50 years ago, the incentives in this agreement as codified By statute, induced the development and enabled it. So, the issue is no longer the wisdom of the plan now, but that Disney has benefits and valuable property rights that were just taken away in retaliation for speech deemed unsatisfactory by the Governor of this state and the legislature. That you would even look at this from a left versus right is just really sad.

Do you want to know what happens when something like this happens? Lawyers advise their clients to say nothing. Disney will respond and it will be at a time of their choosing, with a unified message and in an appropriate forum. This isn’t the sandlots.

 

Wow, what a stupid statement. Setting aside the obvious ridiculousness of comparing Universal's 2 square miles of property to Disney's 40 square miles, if it involves values, it is clearly a free speech violation.

 

The Villages and the Redneck Holy Land, the Daytona International Speedway, do. I think Disney should sue to have ALL of them dissolved, not just randomly selecting pre-1968 as the basis of this law. But they won't. Disney is not going to say a word because they unload $1B in debt instantly and off-load ~ $335M in annual expenses that the counties now must pick up. They are laughing all the way to the bank at DeSantis' blustering.
