Disney spoke up because it’s employees demanded it. Disney speaking up against the legislation was made knowing it would cause problems with a base of its customers, but it was made to show solidarity with its employees and staff, many of whom are gay.

True, but they could have spoken out in support of their employees and they spoke out against the legislation. I’m sure they have smart lawyers and PR people who could have crafted a comment in support.

Basically, if you believe that it is acceptable for a politician to offer public gifts to private entities in exchange for friendly speech, we simply aren’t going to agree. To me, that is very plainly an abuse of power.

Disney not speaking up would also cause problems with a large base of their customer too. Let's not pretend this was some reactionary stance by a CEO with a handful of upset employees. This was a business decision that was thought out and calculated.

Further, I am not sure if anyone has notice the legal position that Disney is quietly taking, but this stupid, ill-conceived attack by the governor is a "heads we win - tales you lose" for Disney vs the state of Florida residents.

 

this is the same story as executive so used to cower in fear from Trump tweets. The real headline should be "executives need to grow a set of balls and fight back"

My firm (not me) represents someone involved in a less visible culture war dispute with the governors office. The client's response to the Gov's office letter can be summarized as "go f yourself." We need more people like that

it's going to cost Florida taxpayers $1 billion, and if you know anything about local politics Disney will end up calling the shots anyway since they will be the biggest taxpayer and the biggest donor in their district, even if they lose their special status. So what exactly do you mean when you say they've had their day in the sun? They will continue to have it until someone rolls into that area who can control more of the economy, and that isn't going to happen in any of our lifetimes
