DeSantis--School Vouchers For All!

    I think any taxpayer should be able to send their kid to the school of their choice and use their tax dollars(however much that is can be debated) accordingly. If I pay taxes that go towards my kids education I should have the choice of where to send them. Do I think some crappy charter schools will open up? Yes. Do I think that is on the parents to find the right school for their kids? Yes.

    Because DeSantis thinks parents should have a choice of where to send their kids for their education. They pay taxes that go towards education, why not have the choice?

    What about people who don't have kids? Should they have to fund your kids' educations?

    Key point: the govt already funds public education for all. This is meant to disrupt public education. Handing out potential 10’s of thousands to people with multiple children for a service already being provided by public schools. What will be the impact here? For the rich who already send their kids to top private schools, it will apparently be a massive rebate far beyond anything their property taxes could have been. It will probably cause a bit of a surge in upper middle class to middle class families to newly apply for private school - for those where tuition may have stretched their budget, a handout like this will have some now thinking they can send little Johnny to that private school they may prefer. The problem will be those existing schools won’t have the seats to accommodate. So you will see increased tuition and application standards at existing schools to accommodate the increased demand. Some fringe schools will pop up to pick up some of that overflow, but those fly by night operators don’t actually do a better job than public schools (data is out there showing it will likely get worse for the victims of these operators). Poor people can forget about it, they still won’t afford private school and this will wreck the funding of public schools, as it’s very likely designed to do.

    Nothing else you list there is comparable to public education. Govt doesn’t directly supply food, govt doesn’t supply healthcare (except to Veterans), and govt doesn’t really supply any meaningful housing. But generally if you just give out money (increasing demand) you will see increased prices on that product. Why else do you think it’s so important for Medicare to negotiate drug prices? Medicare is wonderful for seniors, but there’s no doubt the expectation to have Medicare pay “whatever it costs” is a huge driver of prescription cost inflation and of health care delivery in general.

    Hard to do that but sure. That's like saying I don't use a park in my area, why should I pay taxes for that.

    All taxpayers already pay for public education regardless whether they have kids or not.

    Now whether a large family should be able to “cash out” $30k or $40k a year of taxpayer money to send their kids to private school is a totally separate matter. It seems like complete lunacy to me, and also begging for fraud/grifters.

    Should they have to fund any kids education is a better question. If yes then it applies to all.

    As a taxpayer, do you think that you have a right to know how your/our money is spent? Because currently you can’t get that information from the state regarding voucher schools.

    In addition, under the current scheme here in Florida, schools will just jack up the tuition, parents will pay a bit less, and the school will pocket the difference.

    Why is it hard to do that? It's pretty easy to determine if someone doesn't have kids and much of our income tax system is based on whether tax payers have kids or not. If we're going to do it this way you should lose any tax benefits you get for having kids. Why should I have to subsidize your kids?

    No. This would only be comparable if the government said, 'here's $10k for everyone in the country who needs housing, regardless of income level'. Then the cost of housing would just go up for everyone. That's not how subsidized housing works though. Subsidized housing is a transfer from more well off people to less well off people. That's how school vouchers should work too, if we're going to have them at all.

    Will be interesting to see how the state responds when the cost of tuition skyrockets. Pump more money down the drain, or be happy with the subsidies to people who can afford private school. My guess is the latter.

    Wealthy parents already have a choice.

    Sending state monies to unaccredited schools is a bad idea.

    Sure, but how do determine if I don't want to pay for social services? What if I don't want to participate in social security? Why do I have to do that? But back to reality...

    Since what you propose is never going to happen, I will choose to discuss what actually is happening, not things that will never occur.

    Yes, and no. Taxpayer money should be for public schools. Definitely not for non-accredited schools. Definitely not to enrich wealthy private schools.

    Probably because there almost always are “insidious motives” to Republican politics. That comes with the territory with most of those “southern strategy” politics re: race and sexuality issues.

    Let’s take the stunts with those migrate flights. Like… what is the non insidious interpretation for tricking people into boarding a plane (fraud), trafficking then across the county, only to dump them off at some stunt locations like outside the VP residence or Martha’s Vinyard?

    How tax dollars/vouchers are allowed for religious schools still blows my mind.
