Interesting, i thought RD would win gov, but surprised by how much. This helps explain why - from the article….

“One major Republican consultant who was active in 2022 races told RedState he credited DeSantis’ landslide to the governor’s restrictions on ballot harvesting and his 50-officer election integrity task force that effectively blew up the Democratic turnout model, and then threatened heavy prosecutions of offenders.

The consultant said the effect on Democrats was devastating,”

Could be construed as holding Democrat’s feet to the fire.

many in gop, traditional conservatives, rinos, non maga types liked Desantis. We saw it in thfsg. He has a good bio; repubs very happy with his gov, he was military including Iraq deployment, good middle class upbringing, only married once & kids, worked his way thru Yale. Of course this screams compare to trump.
But imo, his anti-woke message became all that he is and then he even doubled down on it. Maga likes it, but he’s not pulling them away from Dear Leader. Obviously hindsight, but he should have tried to stay the course for the more pragmatic repubs. He would have to fight “traditional” repub label, but he’s down 30+ pts to trump.

I agree, but will add I don’t think there is any strategy he could’ve pursued that would have beat Trump.

If he was the governor he was during his first year in office, he'd easily beat Biden in a head to head. But ironically he wouldn't get the chance because he still wouldn't best Trump in the primary. GOP made its bed. We all told them so. And now they're stuck.

Last December, I thought DeSantis was a shoe-in for the Republican nomination. He did it to himself and for me, his ongoing culture wars along with the immigration boogey man have made him unelectable. He has no idea what it's like to run a small business in the State of Florida that's been impacted by ongoing labor shortages and rising insurance rates. I'll be glad to see him term out in 2027.

there were indicators during his first term. lot of laws being overturned by judges, redistricting, threatening legislators with the veto pen, etc but he went full Orban christian taliban after his last win

Yes, I was a big fan of how DeSantis handled Covid in Florida. He used data from Europe to make recommendations and it was the right call. But he lost me the most on abortion. Going to 6 weeks is a non starter for me. Then the Disney fight was dumb as well. But if you put a gun to my head and make me pick trump or DeSantis, it's DeSantis every time. Agree with the rest of your post.

First term, yes. First year or so I thought he did a relatively strong job

Is he really going on TV and defending the “slaves benefitted form Slavery” crap? I saw a blurb about him making the case on NBC. It’s hard to believe he’s that dumb, unless he thinks he’s running for president of the KKK.

He's now shooting himself in the chest. He went far right and it will cost him a legit chance at the presidency.

Ohh, it couldn't happen to a worse guy, but DeSantis is a close second. The only GOP candidate worth a damn is Asa Hurchinson. He has principles and loves America, both of which are foreign to the majority (NOT ALL) in today's GOP, who place Trump or Trump wannabes first.

I wonder if these new poll numbers will cause the heretofore spineless GOP candidates to try and find one. If they say they have, don't trust them!

DeSantis shouldn’t quit and he should have probably kept the 1st campaign manager. But unless something happens which prevents Trump from running, it doesn’t matter who he hires. Same goes for any other GOP candidate. Major donors have already pulled the plug on him and we’re still what? Half a year from the primaries? He should stick around because there is always a chance Trump will have issues, but as long as Trump is in the GOP primary, it’s his.
