DeSantis isn’t a natural politician, but it seems obvious now that he’s going to have to put himself out there and take some risks. If I were on his team, I’d rather see him start with an easier first opponent and work his way up. I think Newsom is good based on what I’ve seen.
That’s not true. DeSantis barely beat Gillum (who has since been indicted for fraud). Gillum was quite the flawed candidate but almost pulled it off. They had to do a recount it was so close. Florida may be becoming a red state due to DeSantis’ keen leadership, but it is still very much a purple state at the core. The Democrats threw up a sacrificial lamb in Crist, because they knew how well DeSantis is loved.
so then, what you are really saying is that the democrats have been lying to their constituents in Florida for years, and using Fraud to con the blue hair ladies from Palm Beach out of millions to run fake campaigns….. you may be on to something. Check with your sister and she will confirm that I am 100% legit.
I wouldn’t underestimate DeSantis, who walks in with a sizable mandate from a state that people are flocking to. Dems don’t want to admit they’ve squandered their grip on Dade.
In my mind, I’m kinda setting aside DeSantis’ record, his intelligence, and the arguments he could make, for the sake of this discussion. Being a good speaker and debater, much less a top tier one, is a special skill set. It’s similar to how good trial lawyers can trip up very sharp experts who know their field but aren’t trained to argue. An example of a Republican who I think is really dangerous in a debate is Chris Christie. He doesn’t have a path to win for other reasons of course.
Good, seasoned trial lawyers typically look for good cases to litigate. Good professionals typically look for successful companies to work for. Good athletes typically want to play for winning teams. Being on the right side of reality is extremely helpful in a debate. Those aren’t things you can really set aside for sizing up a debate. Newsom could be the best debater in the world, but he’s going to be defending a shit hole for 90 minutes. It’s not going to be a debate about Biden. If DeSantis allows that, then he is foolish for doing so. I’m assuming this will be a debate about life in California versus Florida. The slick salesman can try all of his tricks to sell me the old beat up Monte Carlo, but I’m still not going to buy it.
Sure, good cases help. But I’ve seen cases where the lawyers are mismatched, and I really think the better lawyer could have switched sides and still won. I’ve seen that in some debates too where the two people may be asked to take the other sides position.
yeah, that is the biggest shocker of the FL election. Let’s see how he polls with the national Hispanic vote in 5 months.
I’m also disagreeing here. Florida has always been purple and Meatball barely won his first election. Gerrymandering, Trump boats rallies, and a crappy Democratic slate has made it seem unbalanced. I will be surprised if the Pubs hold onto Florida.
Interestingly, Florida population has strong growth in various areas, but Miami Dade seems to be flat or small decline. Cool place to visit but crowded and I’m not sure how so many afford to live there. Costs are a big reason people live and move where they do. https://www.axios.com/local/miami/2023/04/11/miami-dade-county-population-census-2022
It is still by far the most populated county in Florida and was a reliable Dem stronghold for years. But whatever helps you get through your day….
Desantis is not a good speaker when challenged. He should be concerned when it comes to Newsom. Talking about policy won't matter
