I read the quote in its original context. I did not read one sentence in isolation. It seemed to me he was addressing disinformation…and he’s talking about what they can do to combat it. Now, I am open to the possibility that Kerry did not choose his words well and could have communicated with greater clarity. That is certainly possible, but his words as written don’t clearly say he was talking about passing climate policy. They could easily be interpreted the way I read it.

He didn't make any suggestions on how the government can combat disinformation. He conceded the 1st Amendment makes addressing it nearly impossible. Given that reality, he proposes an alternative: "So what we need is to win the ground...to effect change..."

Your interpretation has him saying: "We Democrats, currently in power, have talked about smashing disinformation. But the 1st Amendment makes that hard. So what we really need to do is win the election and stay in power. Then we can smash."

Winning the 2024 election doesn't change the disinformation calculus one iota. The next administration will have the same challenges as the current one.

It is clear he is talking about 'change' in the broad, serving the people and earth, kinda way. Please re-read @rivergator's transcript again.

    Bottom of a pint glass
Trump goes unhinged in anti free speech against CBS and 60 Minutes.

“The producers of 60 Minutes sliced and diced (“cut and pasted”) Lyin’ Kamala’s answers to questions, which were virtually incoherent, over and over again, some by as many as four times in a single sentence or thought, all in an effort, possibly illegal as part of the “News Division,” which must be licensed, to make her look “more Presidential,” or a least, better.”

The former president’s tirade continued as he claimed that the alleged manipulation constituted a potential “major Campaign Finance Violation” and a “stain on the reputation of 60 Minutes” that would tarnish the program’s legacy. He demanded “a MAJOR AND IMMEDIATE APOLOGY!” from the network and called for an investigation into the matter, labeling it an example of “FAKE NEWS.”

Yes, neither party defends free speech.

Larger problem: Americans aren’t big on it.
