The INT was sort of on Mertz. He had a much better read but yes, the receiver dropped it. It would have been a much bigger play if he made the right read even if the receiver didn't s the bed.
If the receiver dropped a ball that should have been caught (which should have been) then the int is on the receiver.
You can lose 6 games in the NFL and still win the Super Bowl. You lose two SEC games and you hope to go to a respectable bowl game.
I agree that it was a dangerous throw. And when I saw it I said why??? But when I saw the replay, the ball was right in his hands. You got to hold on to the ball. That was on the TE.
I acknowledged the kid should have caught it. A freshman dropping the ball in the middle of 3 defenders is a little more forgiving to me than a veteran QB making that read over the much better one in the seam.
Agree with everything but the two bolded points. - Mertz forced that into traffic, yeah it bounced off the TE's hands but that's a tough catch to make and our TE's aren't exactly top tier. Should have went somewhere else. I know it isn't the main point you were making but just my two cents. - I think we have two very good backs. I think they are running into stacked boxes because we aren't stretching the field and backing the secondary up. I won't even say the OL is underperforming. Too many guys up at the LOS
Turnovers are a moot point when your offense would be unable to capitalize on them. They're fun, can flip close games and be momentum changers but right now should be very low on the totem pole. Let's start with tackling and assignments. Rushing TD vs 13 defenders anyone?
I understand what you are saying and it makes sense. In defense of Mertz, I think he was trying to move the sticks. Clearly, Pearsall was the better option and would have gained (based on your photo) more yards. Pearsall also has better hands.
Anyone think coach will try to use the pass to establish the run first against Vandy? Just kicking thoughts around.
It was a high throw.....it could have never hit the TE in the chest because it bounced off the reciever's hands above his head. Should a sure-handed receiver made that catch, sure, so it wasn't really an awful throw, but it could have been better placed.
This team has a lot of issues, but turnover margin s/b a major focus on every team IMO. I don't see them as a low priority at all. Turnovers won the game for Ky last year. As poorly as the team played vs Ky, without the early Mertz pick and the dropped pick 6 by Marshall, Gators might have stole one last week. Of course that doesn't mean there aren't fundamental issues to address.
Teams with the most negative fumble recovery margin to date: Arizona State -4 (21% recovery rate), Texas A&M -3.5 (29%), Notre Dame -3.5 (29%), Kansas -3 (31%), Arkansas State -2.5 (0%), Rutgers -2.5 (14%), West Virginia -2.5 (14%), James Madison -2.5 (27%), Florida -2.5 (31%), Illinois -2.5 (31%)
That’s a want to thing. They wanted to much more than we did. 280 is alltime bad and I don’t think we are. We laid down and got our dodo pushed in. Hopefully the kids remember this and never take it again.
That two turnovers that were kinda based on luck. First off, we didn’t force them to pass in the first place and secon , we don’t have any ball hawk types in our secondary at this point.
