This. Miami is around 20 years, and Nebraska is at 22. "But it could NEVER happen to US!!"

    Stupid fans...

I've learned long ago that it doesn't mean jack how much money you make. When you are in a position to make $100K a year or more, you have knowledge and skill sets, but also a passion for your work. Say what you will about any of our past or present coaches, but for the most part, they had/have a passion that burns. Not just college football, either.

Why does Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, or all the other 70s bands still tour? Why do 80-something professors still teach. Why do people who are more than comfortable remain in their jobs? Why do so many older coaches like Spurrier, Beamer or many others remain active with their schools? Why the hell is Saban still coaching? It isn't so they could buy more security for their grand children.

    It's all about the passion...

(Notice I didn't include politicians. There's a difference between passion and the pursuit of power lol)...

I largely agree with you, but I hope you didn't buy the "Foley wanted to see his resume" nonsense. I also seriously doubt he left because Foley wouldn't back him on Dockett. I simply never thought he was that petty.

For me, he had 5 million reasons for leaving Florida, as you said. He wanted to see if the FnG would work in the NFL (it didn't), and being the highest paid head coach in the NFL without coaching an NFL down had to appeal to him. But he also commented, "I guess 10-win seasons are no longer good enough at Florida." I count that as more of a minor irritant than a motivation for leaving. He did want to come back in 2005, I believe, but by then, Machen had his eyes trained on Meyer for a year...

It probably hasn't been since Wallace Wade a century ago. I think expectations are higher at Alabama than anywhere in the nation, with the dimly arguable exception of Ohio State..

You are absolutely right. Hell no, he hasn't. This thread is inching closer and closer to the "blame it on the impatient fans" track. Nothing in Muschamp, McElwain, and Mullen's track record after they left has proven that the fans were wrong.
Dabo's case is totally different. Dude has proven without a doubt he deserves to be in the upper echelon.

Which is why I think he doesn't ever take that job.
Obv, after this season Bama may not want him anyway.
But IMO even if Saban left after 18 Dabo turns them down.

I LOVE this. It should not happen that a NC level coach has to respond to random fans over a phone weekly, but how classic that Dabo got real. Modern technology gives the village idiot a chance to speak a lot of people. Somebody needs to say “Hey, you are the village idiot.”

It also points out a piece of Napier I like. His focus on discipline and humility. Arrogant teams can win titles if they are talented enough. Only those who stay grounded and disciplined establish greatness. We will see on this…

Anyway, in life all of us have bad days/seasons. Conversely, sometimes we do well. But in sports (like politics/entertainment - hell, even science), every spike (up or down) becomes a story with clowns (on the internet/TV) weighing in. Maybe Tyler from Spartanburg will enlighten us on conflict in the Middle East, the Stones new album, and global warming. The real question is “why does a NC football coach have to answer such folks weekly and why do fans think it adds any true value?” Time and data teach but Tik tok videos and Tyler from Spartanburg do not.

    Now get off my lawn!

After two nattys? I mean, you'd have a Tyler from Ocala instead of a Tyler from Spartanburg probably complaining but that's just how it goes in college football.

I don't have a problem with what Dabo said but he came dangerously close to making his comments about more than just this one caller. It will be water under the bridge if he turns things around, but this will be his McElwain-death threats moment if he can't. It's not going to be as swift a breakup as UF and McElwain precisely because of what he has accomplished at Clemson (ya know, appreciation) but those comments will hit that fanbase a little different if Clemson continues to struggle.

Are you certain? Lol... I totally agree with you.

Swinnney has given Clemson a status that has not even been close to emulated at that school since Danny Ford road the perfect wave to the Natty over 40 years ago.

If Dabo didn’t care what that dude’s opinion was, it sure didn’t sound like it. And he didn’t answer the $11M question directly. Don’t have an issue with what Dabo said, just wished he’d say something like the market dictated his salary based on the perceived value he’s brought. Just like the market dictated his salary when he was making minimum wage as an assistant starting out.

Steve and Earnest were the only ones that called him out on the egregious behavior. The rest of our administration didn't do diddly squat. It was shameful.

Gonna be the lone voice for the wealth gap here… I’ll take my lumps and bacons. There is a level of snotty entitlement for coaches and pro athletes nowadays that ONLY comes from money and being disconnected from the working class. Zero clue what the construction workers, janitors, cops, nurses, concession stand dudes who support your program go through on a daily basis for 40 grand a year all to shell out 200$ to take their family to see you. And then you suck?
if I suck at my job I get yelled at by a few people. You 11 million times what I get, so you get yelled at by a few more. You also get cheered when you win. So take your lumps like an adult, aplogize for sucking… stop blaming fans for being “impatient or whiny or never having played or coaches…. Stop turning the media against part of the fan base and talk about how much money you make to suck. Zero of us get to be mediocre for years and blame it on someone else and continue to collect 11 million. This isn’t about Dabo winning chips and the fans being impatient… that’s arguable… he’s done a lot there. This is about class warfare. Pro athletes have started this snottiness too. Being above reproached or criticism because you make a ton of money and some “lowly hick who digs ditches who couldn’t coach if he tried” is calling you out. Be respectful and humble like your good book says Dabo and let the fans get a few shots in.
Also- Dabo isn’t a real name. It’s like the name of a ventriloquist doll or someone’s iguana but it’s not a human name dumba&$
