That's basically what we've been doing, just putting out fires when hospitals start to get overwhelmed. The problem is that you can't not lockdown if hospitals are overrun. Deaths from all causes will really surge when that happens, and panic sets in. When that happens, all bets are off, people will turn on each other like you've never seen before, many will direct their anger irrationally, and people you've known your whole life will be doing things you could never imagine them of doing.

The numbers now— 184,000+ yesterday— were really unthinkable two weeks ago. At least for many. Nearly 72 million People voted for the party pushing this level of virus growth. This is what herd immunity means. GOP gains everywhere. So, they are getting what they voted for. I hope right wing judges and xenophobic immigration policies are worth the failed handling of a national/ international emergency.

 

You can’t force people to be tested. Especially ones who have no symptoms. I don’t see that as a viable solution, for that reason. And even if we could force people, I’m not convinced it would work. We’ve tested 150,000,000 people. Hasn’t done a lot of good.

That’s not what we’ve been doing. We have not been allowing people to assess the risk and proceed at their own discretion. When schools are closed, but night clubs, restaurants and bars are still open.... that’s what we call a clusterf***. If the hospitals become overran, again, people need to assess the risk and proceed at their own discretion. As Ivan Drago would say: if they die, they die.

 

Are we talking about a contagious virus or sky diving? While people are out there “assessing their risk” they can infect others that aren’t quite as adventurous. If we could limit the deaths to just the people out there living their lives, I’d be all for it, but that’s not how infectious viruses work.

 

Because it's not nearly enough. We need to test as many people as possible multiple times a week.

 

We have the highest per capita testing rate in the world. And again, you can't force people to be tested. If you're truly worried about the risk, then a much more practical approach would be to assume everybody outside of your household has Covid-19, at this point.

 

How many people die each year because a drunk driver assessed the risk and proceeded at their own discretion?

 

Now add on a quirky effect where the effects of drunk driving actually spread beyond the initial accident.

 

Sorry, that analogy won't work. We have laws that criminalize drunk driving. Drivers are clearly not allowed to proceed at their own risk. They have speed limits, traffic laws, traffic signals that all become criminal activity if they are broken. Going to the grocery store to get a gallon of milk is not a crime. Peaceful protesting of racial injustice is not a crime.

No, we do not have the highest per capita testing rate in the world. Israel, Czech Republic, and Belgium all have higher rates of testing per capita. As have 11 other countries. Facts matter.

It should be noted that 3rd is not 1st, so that statement would still be false.

Edit: Sorry, I actually looked at the wrong column on that website. We are 19th. Behind UK, Israel, and Denmark and 15 other countries.

 

So we can all correctly assume you are as opposed to those laws as you are to another lockdown?
