How did those Euro lockdowns go? The sooner everyone understands that a virus this contagious will eventually get thru the population the better. Isolate the sick and elderly to the best of our ability and practice social distancing. The idea that 6 week lockdowns will solve everything is fools gold.

 

Playing the herd immunity card is the policy of fringe idiots. No respected scientist endorses it.

At least if he was going to insult me, he could have backed it up with data or argument. But, that is fine. It is a blessing to be employed and working in these times at a business that can function. Many people are suffering and the prolonged suffering is a problem. Short term pain in exchange for long term gain. But, it is an academic point because the GOP states in particular have opted for a community spread strategy.

 

Unless the Americans citizens are ok with handing their freedom to the fed gov, no lockdown will work. At this point, every persons would have to stay inside their home for at least 10 days. Total insanity. For most anyway. I think a few on here would be fine with doors welded shut.

That was last week. We are up over 60,000 cases yesterday. But the 7 day average is definitely up. With the largest surges in different states Than the summer surge in the South.

 

I wouldn't call them morons, but they are going against the tide in terms of what the vast majority of public health and medical personnel have recommended. The Great Barrington Declaration seems to fly in the face of some stubborn realities.

1. As the John Snow Memorandum points out achieving herd immunity by opening things up is flawed. This has been pointed out by numerous other public health experts too. In the US, we're talking needing 100s of millions of people or roughly 15x the number infected already.

2. We don't know the effects of antibodies or how long they'll last etc. So we're relying on unknowns in a potentially catastrophic trade-off.

3. We don't try to achieve herd immunity naturally with other viruses. We rely on vaccines because they provide much more resilient herd protection. And even then it can be challenge.

4. The Swedish experiment failure. Sweden's chief epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, acknowledged that his plan didn't or won't achieve herd immunity and that if he could do it over, he'd have implemented more restrictions.

It seems that those who want to throw open the doors and have everything simply go back to normal, sans any effort to control the spread, miss what needs to be done and should have from the outset to achieve what it is that they want, which is according to most public health experts (e.g. see here) testing, tracing, and isolating on a far larger scale than we are doing. There are successful models for this, particularly in places like Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. They can show us how to do much better.
