So we cleared 1000 yesterday, what is the new measuring stick? Just trying to make sure I’m prepared.

If you're referring to me, I never named 1,000 as the measuring stick. I suppose you all have resorted to dreaming up arguments from my end, because you can't refute the ones I've actually made. As Okla posted earlier, the death rate is clearly plunging. The bottom line is, if you contract Covid-19 today, your chances of dying are really, really low. If you take out the April data, a time when we knew virtually NOTHING about the virus or treating it, sure, the death rate looks closer to 4%. But if we're talking about new cases, going back 60 days, the death rate has been cut in half. Perhaps more. You're just going to have to accept the fact that we know more about the virus, doctors are treating it more effectively and governors are no longer doing crazy stuff like sending Covid seniors to nursing homes.

The death rate is dropping. I'm truly sorry that upsets you guys so much. This post alone will no doubt generate 20 direct or indirect replies with innuendo, things I never said and outright lies. Just accept. The death rate on this virus is getting lower by the day.

I don't have time to go back and look, but it would not surprise me if you're taking buckeye's post out of context. I am also not surprised that we topped 1,000 deaths since we're seeing it spread like wildfire. That said, we're approaching flu-like death rates if this keeps up. Actually, if the CDC is right about the infection rate, we're already at flu death rates. Considering we've been fighting it for less than four months, it stands to reason we'll continue to improve treatments, knowledge, etc. We may or may not get a vaccine soon, but at least we can take comfort in the fact that real progress is being made on keeping people alive from this. The panic and fearmongering continue, however. That won't stop until November, at least.

 

I generally like CNN but.... come on... there are better angles to cover the risk of going back to school than a headline that teachers are preparing wills.

As an aside I wish everyone that has children would prepare a freaking will. My Dad didn't and when he died it was an expensive mess to legally dole out his stuff. Not to mention one of my siblings refused to pay her share to the probate lawyers so I got hassled non-stop for about 2 years.

And the CDC revised their death rate to .65% last week. That is nothing Like the flu, nor are the 140k deaths (and 200k by November based on the last model I saw).
Yes treatments are getting better, yes we are doing a better job of isolating the vulnerable, so yes death rates are lower which is good. but any comparison to the flu is still silly.
For me I have said all along we won’t get back to the worst of the death days probably , but they are going to go up (and they have), the question is how high. So every day deaths go up is a day further from knowing that answer. And 1000 a day would be 365k in a year, so we aren’t at a good number now.

 

What is the CDC's revised death rate for people under 65 years old?

 

I think this is actually a dangerous assumption, if the virus spreads out of control in the rest of the country (not just the NYC metro area), it could actually get far worse in total scale than it originally was from the Northeast outbreak, when the virus was still pretty low in the rest of the country.

You said it yourself, 1000k a day is not a good number at all, and unfortunately with what has been going on in a few states in particular, the signs are it's going to be going up dramatically. Some states are literally doing nothing right now to slow the spread (look at the idiot gov. in Georgia who cancelled all city and local mask mandates!).

 

For context, our worst influenza season under the modern reporting system was 2017-18. The death rate during that was 0.14% with about 61,000 deaths.

Another parent of two children, ages 10 and 3, said she is concerned that wearing a mask would teach her older child to fear the world and that both of her kids would not learn proper socialization if their faces were covered, the Tribune reported.

“It’s going to rewire their brains,” the mother said. “I’m especially not going to send my son back to have his mind broken.”

 

I was in Utah county last week and I can tell you they are doing a better job of masking that north central Florida.

This is just a complaint of Karens congregrated. The general public in Utah isn't represented by these people.

 

I don’t think they have a blended one for under 65, but feel free to look. But if your argument is that it’s relatively safer for those the younger you go, not sure what we would be debating, that’s been agreed upon since day one. That is only a small part of the picture - from hospitalizations to who those younger people infect, to economic consequences when businesses can’t safely open because of the infection rate, US citizens not being allowed to travel, healthcare costs that we will all pay for, etc etc etc. And even putting all of that aside, 1000 deaths a day would be 365k in a year. I don’t think many people would call that acceptable.
we aren’t in a good place, and we really aren’t in a good place compared to other countries that learned from their worst weeks and got it under control while we are still flailing around like morons yelling about freedom from masks and having Covid parties.

Is all this anti-mask stuff coming from facebook? A Russian-op? Clearly the woman still claiming "COVID is a hoax" is getting deranged misinformation from somewhere.

I truly don't get these people, but their existence is devoid of logic.
