I get that there is a lot of negative coverage, but there is a lot of negativity. After all, we still have thousands getting sick every day and we don't have a vaccine so positive developments are or imo must be moderated by the dangerous reality we continue to face.

I like to read positive stories but if things are dangerous and that danger is by definition negative, then I would expect the coverage to reflect it.

 

Well, here is some good news, if for the moment. I'm keeping data at three-day intervals. Here are the three-day increases:

Lowest increases for world fatalities, U.S. cases, and U.S. fatalities this month. I've got data going back to mid March, but have only calculated increases during this interval. Let's hope that some of the outrageous disregard for physical distancing that we've seen in places like Daytona, Ozarks, and Houston do not result in later increases.

Remember too, that we may face another wave in the fall. This will likely be a marathon, not a sprint but it's interesting to see the progression during the past month.

Just like we want to measure per capita rates, so too do we want to measure positive cases against tests.

 

So you're saying the media isn't so bad...in retrospect?

I like a feel good story as the next person, and have we not all seen stories about firefighters and police saluting healthcare workers and those about front line workers busting ass to help save people's lives? But those are of a different type than reports about numbers and danger and I want to know to the extent possible what the true risk is. I don't think rosy stories or pointing to recoveries tells us, but quite possibly (or imo likely) is to distract from that, at least it seemed with her drive by comment.

 

Valved masks being outlawed. Great to protect you, useless for protecting others. There seems to be no more selfish act than wearing a valved masks that funnels and directs your exhale with no filtering qualities.

States Are Banning This One Type of Face Mask

There are N95 face masks on the market with one-way valves that release your expelled air through a filter. While they may be more comfortable and less restrictive than masks without a valve, they are also useless in preventing the COVID-19 spread. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend covering your nose and mouth in order to protect yourself from infection but also to protect others from coming into contact with your respiratory droplets. If your mask doesn't restrict the path of your own exhalations, you're still putting other people in danger, even if you have no symptoms. Keep in mind that many carriers of the disease are asymptomatic but still contagious.

Per Fast Company, N95 masks with valves are meant to serve an industrial purpose. They're intended to prevent people in factories and other places where the air is compromised from breathing in dust and other toxins and can be found in hardware stores. They aren't used in a healthcare setting for the very reasons stated above. They don't protect anyone around you.

Forbes predicts that the face mask with valve ban will extend to other areas. But whether or not your state enacts this rule, you're much better off wearing a mask without one. “Just because you’re 21, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a responsibility to other people, even though your chances of having a problem are pretty slim.” McConnell added. “I think the more we can say that the better.”

McConnell also said that he wears a face covering to set a "good example" for the public, Politico noted. He pointed to photos “all over the place” of him wearing a mask as evidence of his commitment.

 

@RIP I couldn't find the original thread, but I passed by our Trump merchandise guy in Argyle and saw he is now selling face masks as well. I feel like he is misjudging his clientele.

 

Tangentially related, we were out the other day and noticed a pop-up mask shop in a strip mall near Sawgrass Mills (Sunrise / Ft Lauderdale area). Literally had a sign in the window that said "Free mask with hand sanitizer purchase." Gotta love capitalism!

But on the positive front, we are coming up on 500k people recovered from it in the US. That’s a pretty nice number.

 

And the panties were more effective than a valved mask which discharges and catches nothing...

thankfully digital media did not exist when I was wearing panties on my head....
